Auto gearbox

My father in law says he has an auto box in his Aladdins cave of a garage for an VW t2, he's pretty sure it was from an earlybay and working fine when he removed it. I didn't even know these existed (if they did) . So are these very rare? Would it be worth much to anybody?

Is there a code or part number that I could look for on it?

Could be wrong, but I read that auto boxes only came with type 4 engines?
That would make it late only.

Best guess would be from an early with a conversion.

It's been in the garage for 20+ years, he could be wrong about its real age. Just after a bit more info before I dig it out and clean it up.
