Hiya all.

Got a bit of a problem with the rear drum brakes on my 68.

It would appear that the rear left brake drum is rubbing whilst driving, as the wheel gets really hot but this only happens when driving around town, i.e after lots of braking.

With a long trip on the motorway or something like that, the problem appears to be fine.

I.e. Drove back from Bude to wiltshire, checking the wheel temp at regular intervals and the only time it got hot was when i got home, i.e. off the motorway onto local roads.

Another weird thing is that when i left bude, until i got on dual carriage way, the wheel was hot.

So i'm guessing that the brakes are sticking on longer than they should as they appear to sort them selves out after a while of not braking.

I hope this all makes sence, but can anybody shed any light on what this could be.

Rear brake shoes have been recently replaced and all brakes bled and this is still happening.

Thanks

When you replaced the shoes did you give the entire system a clean down, de grease and replace the seals on the cylinders sand the leading edge of the shoes set up the hand brake and grease all the relevant parts etc.. or was it a quick brush and new shoes in with a bleed?

Is it more prevalent after the hand brake has been applied?

or just on the depression of the foot pedal?

Cheers for the reply.

A bit more information!

A couple of months ago i drove my van from wiltshire to Bude with no problems.

Pulled up at bude and put the hand brake on, 2 minutes later, i hear a ping and the bleed nipple has shot off the rear left brake and there is loads of smoke coming from left brake.

The wheel was roasting hot, so i let it cool down and took it out round the block.

100 feet down the road the back left brake locks on and then releases, so i limp to a garage where they replaced the shattered brake shoe, spring and bled the brakes.

Unfortunately, they didn't actually solve the problem as on the way home the wheel got hot again.

I can't feel the brakes sticking when i'm driving!

Hope this info makes things clearer.

Personally fella i'd go for a full overhaul on all wheels, check the rubber hoses, all the back plate items stripped and cleaned/replaced using a service kit.

The other thing is did they they all the oil out as if its had excessive heat as it obviously has the oil breaks down and contaminant from the hoses due to heat can lead to some of the probs you are experiencing...empty the entire system and refil (as its still getting excessive heat)....

go through all the rigid pipework as well and see that its in serviceable condition....

Cheers for all the repies.

The vans going in to have the front repaired on monday so i won't be able to do anything yet.

As soon as i get it back, i will start stripping things down and see what is going on.

Cheers

Classic reason for brakes sticking is flexi hose that has swollen and is blocked so that pressure get to wheel, but not back.

Could be a dodgy drum? i had one that was on the piss on my van, and had some warm breaking issues, changed the drum and all sorted.

Worth a quick check, take the drum off and check it all over with some sort of metal flat edge (rule etc) and do some quick measurements, mine was out when i checked it (after the wheel fell off on the M5!!!! )

had this, agree with Tipi, flap inside old hose lets pressure on to brake and holds or slows release

Excellent.

Thanks all for the replies.

I've ordered 4 new flexi hoses today, (If i'm doing 1 i might as well do them all).

Will keep the thread up to date on how i get on.

Cheer again all

I would agree with the flexi hose problem, replace all four good man. Also when you adjust the rear brakes, you have to have both rear wheels in the air, pull the handbrake on 6 clicks then carry out the toothed wheel adjustment. If you don't do it like this ,when you let the wheels back down and drive it the handbrake can come on when you go over bumps.
