I took the engine out of the deluxe today, not realising that bays don't have framehorns like bugs do, and the box sort of fell out, just hanging by the front mount.

Is this usual or do you guys think I may need a new front mount?

Haven't looked yet, I don't dare!

ive heard of the gearbox actually dropping on heads before

as a rule of thumb i would always chain it up just incase but it should be ok i doubt youve done any damage.

It's now resting on a battery until the weekend.

So are they all just suspended between the front mount and the engine mount then?
:?:

Mine is suspended only on the engine mount and front mount too ('71 bay)

I kept my gearbox up with a jack :)

Cool, thought I might be missing summat as some are tied into the body at the top aren't they?

no all early bays are like that, splits have a support bar and i think late bays do too, but earlies just use the front support and rear engine to hold them strange but true... i have made myself a metal frame that i bolt in on the bell housing when i remove engine.. and rest onto rear wheel arch tubs made from 1" box section

and use this to hold gear box up so i can still roll van around to with no worries of any dange to gearbox or cv's

'72 crossovers are also attached above the bell housing (sometimes)
its bad enough taking a type 4 lump out ,without the added hassle of proping up the gearbox

quite true fella the earlies are supported by the front hanger and the engine, the crossover> bell houseing has two lugs to support since it was getting the added Ooomph of the type 4 as an option...there are after market hangers available if you want to support it, generally for performance use...

I'm fitting a type 1 lump putting out about 120bhp, do you think I'll need a gearbox support for it?

:?:

Personally I would, but theres plenty not bothering without much problems, it should take out some / majority of the twist in the box on hard take offs...

Any idea who sells them?

Not had much luck so far.

Thanks.

theres plenty others out there the intermediate is a quick and cheap alternative to a weld in support...

I saw that page, but have no idea which one I need!

None seem to be for a 1970 bay.

Thats me thinking back to my bug days ... these nights are addling my brain... there was something on the early bay not so long back I'll see If I can find it ....

It shouldnt be that difficult to knock something up anyway, although I would suggest using urethane mounts as a solid support could be a tad harsh....

I've had no problems with mine and i've not got an intermediate g/box mounting.
Up to you if you want peace of mind but personally i dont think you need one.
Also....how many hard launches are you going to do?

I've made plenty and its never been a problem. Depends on how much grip you're gonna get too, as i suffer from wheel spin too much but atleast its saving the CV joints etc.... 8)
