Just looking around for a fridge for the camper
There are some lovely fridges out there (12 v ) but just really expensive
I've seen these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Homesun-Hotel-36litres-Mini-Bar-Fridge-Silent-Run-Black-UK-/221275657728" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Any reason this couldn't be used in a camper with a 12v - 240 v inverter ?

suspect as it is a 230v device it will drain a 12v battery pretty quick. A proper 3 way fridge is so useful.

^^^ whs with an inverter, your battery will only last a matter of hours, :? 3-way fridge or a proper igloo cooler box is the way to go 8)

Hi,

Nice enough fridge, though uses a Peltier Element http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not that effiecent at 12V, I reckon at least 50-60W, so 5-6aH, so you standard 80aH (allowing for 80% discharge cycle) will be dead in 10-15hrs max. Factor in some power loss with a mains inverter also...These use juice! I think even my 80W solar panel which takes up the westy roof rack would struggle even in the bright sun we have had, I've only seen just about 60w input to my leisure battery on the really bright days.

Now, if you are on a hook up, or engine running, wouldn't be a issue, but these type of coolers do draw a far few amps on 12V, which is why a compressor fridge like a Waeco CR50 is much more efficient, much lower run cycle, and only 40W, but not running as often, hence more efficient with the lower power consumption.

Current Consumption (12 volts DC): 1.4 Ah/h at +25°C ambient temperature,
1.7 Ah/h at +32°C ambient temperature,
both at +5°C interior temperature and -18°C in the freezer compartment

Spec CR50:

As will all 12V systems, voltage drop is a issue, the longer the cable run, the greater the resistance, and the lower the actual power will be at t'other end...this is one reason why i want the most DC voltage at the other end of my system, so i have very flexible multistrand 25mm2 copper cable to minimise voltage drop, overkill, with my current set-up though, but not if i start pulling some amps through the inverter.

If you have access to a westy cooler or suchlike, maybe make your own DIY unit, you could even just buy a 2nd hand cooler on eBay, cut it and use the fan and element into whatever you want? New cool boxs are like £35

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/24L-240V-AC-12V-DC-COOLBOX-COOLER-HOT-COLD-PORTABLE-ELECTRIC-COOL-BOX-CAR-HOME-/360725202862?pt=UK_TravelTickets_Accessories_RL&hash=item53fce5c7ae#ht_3673wt_1255" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or buy a element, heatsink and heatsink compound, and a PC fan, and do it yourself. You may be even able to use a dead pc power supply.

Or a group buy! :lol:

Anyway, hope this helps!

Cheers,

Alistair

Alistair, I can`t even sort out my back light on my bus :evil: It`s actually turned into a bit of an epic theatre now as I started off without one back light and a blowing fuse, then I got two sidelights that don`t want to play (connected ?? hhhmmmm) and today I lost a brake light and my left hand indicator is on part time work when it feels like it. I am now the proud owner of a multimeter and lots of bits of wire and stuff, but getting nowhere :roll:

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,I`m frightened to have another look in case I break something else :shock: :roll: :shock:

Hi OD

I'm not that much better dude! Sounds like maybe dodgy fuses, poor connections. Have a mooch around the fuse box, i found quite a few terminals which virtually fell off, remade with new crimps. A fiberglass pen is great for cleaning terminals and contacts. My fuse box is hanging down, and has been for years, i'm reluctant to fit it correctly as the wire has curved to shape, i feel something is likely to dislodge if moved about too much. I have a crappy indicator relay with solid core wiring to the fuse box, every now and then, it pops out of the crimp, next time it's in trouble if it does it again..... :evil:

This aint helpfull at all but i travel with a mate with hook up and fridge, job done.
He swears by his 3 way fridge runs a whole season on one gas bottle .
we buy cold beers from tesco and drink em before they get warm.
no help i know but inverters are lovely battery killers though.

jth.

We have a waeco cr50 in our van and its great, will last a long weekend running on the leisure battery if fully charged before leaving and will switch over to mains automatically if connected.

Is only 12v and 240v but its fine and as its a condensing style fridge ( I think that's right) no need for vents in the side of your van etc which most 3 way fridges require.

Not cheap but well worth it :)

I just got a e mail yesterday from the company i got mine from, there have a offer on, it seems that most prices seem 470 plus, cheapest about 439, they have it on for 375 delivered. Here's the mail i got:

We have many great offers currently running, but are able to offer the Waeco CR50 cool matic fridge for a delivered price of £375.00 (delivered to a UK postcode only), this offer is running while we have the over stocked situation and for telephone orders only (01858 432700), we are able to take credit, debit cards or bacs payments if preferred.

many thanks

jay
