How long before the crossover owner realizes their front panel is upside down?

It's an original van with late front panel and early bumpers. I don't know whether there are any other differences. Have to ask the crossover owners.

I've heard about these mysterious machines before, it has always puzzled me as to how they came about.. VW would have had to go to some effort to create these, as the upper half of the front panel is 'late' with the high indicators and square grille, Yet the lower half is 'early' and lacks the distinctive lip/deformation panel seen on later vans plus the non existent low indicator holes.. seems a bit silly for VW to produce all the factory gear to make a front panel for such a small production run!.. I feel a new topic coming on, I'm eager to find the answers!!!

easiest answer is there a late replacement panel used and you cant buy early ones, schofiled do sell the late panel already modded to early. its had a respray so probably had the panel replaced as well?

Late crossovers got the late front end/bumpers before loosing the early dash, petrol flap, cargo door handle etc , like Johnny said could have had a repair on the front and opted for the late panel due to scarcity of early ones.
I saw an OG right hand drive deluxe in london a while back, og paint and all the trim, real time warp van until I overtook it and saw the freshly painted late bay front panel
Think I would have been happier with rust or damage.

I hate it when people do that! I've seen quite a few 'early' bay windows for sale on ebay etc with late front ends...

What confuses me about this one is how they removed the huge lip from the lower front panel and kept the original early one, yet they didn't keep the low indicators!

My early's front panel is a late one with all the blanking done, you can't tell the difference (exept for the grille not fitting perfectly flush)

....a crossover 8) is a late bay using up parts left over from the early bays production  .....hence early crossovers were early bay front floor/arches/bumper and panel.....at some point this would become a mixture :? .....so when the lowlight fronts ran out they would put a highlight front on  ........ you do see some genuine crossovers with an early front floor/arches/bumper but with a later front (one of the Dutch companies on Samba had one for sale)....mine has had at least one replacement front panel (a late) but an earlier (80's) picture of it in the Alpes shows a late front panel....whether that is original or not I don't know. maybe the 'M' code kids can say  Mine was registered in Aug 72...don't know the build date and it isn't here to check

The deformation panel under later bumpers is a separate panel to the front hence easily changed separately in production....

....just look at Brazillian split/bays etc....why waste perfectly good panels...stick 'em on what ever you have
