After reading StuF's clutch thread I thought I'd post these links up in case they are of use to anyone, seems to be a fair bit cheaper than the usual suspects even after delivery (£6). I checked the part numbers on the LUK website so hopefully it's right but please satisfy yourself! You may even find them cheaper elsewhere using the part numbers, I used SAF as they have a local branch so I could collect:

68-70 (pad type) LUK part: 620085700 £68.40
http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/buy/VOLKSWAGEN/BEETLE/1.5/1966/__/33/transmission/luk-clutch-kits/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

71- (no pad type) LUK part: 620000706 £56.74
http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/details/VOLKSWAGEN/BEETLE/1.6/1970/__/33/620000706/clutch-kit/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hopefully it might save someone a few quid :)

Cheers for this, I'm just about to order one and was about to get it from machine 7 at around £100

Two questions: are LUK any good as a make?

Secondly is the one for a 1500 beetle deffinately the right one?

Many thanks

Mike

The ones Machine 7 supply are LUK ones.

As Adam has pointed out its year specific, the clutch release bearing changed from 71 so if you have a later early its needs the later type clutch and release bearing.

Good find Adam, I think I'll be giving them a go.

Glad to help, I've had a couple off them in the past and they are still going strong.

Whilst they both say for a beetle the part numbers from the LUK catalogue are correct for a bus as well. As Graham said it's just making sure you get the correct one for the year of your box.

Put it this way, no matter what make of car you drive, it's more than likely fitted with an LUK clutch by the OEM!

I just this last weekend fitted an M7 LUK clutch kit to my bus. very happy with it so far... but remember, clean, clean, and clean again.. mine needed cleaning around 7 times before the cloth came back clean!

Defo stick with LUK not cheaper options, saves having to pull the engine again and again and arsing about with release bearings etcetc, only to end up fitting an Luk eventually anyway. I learnt the hard way...

Just ordered mine.....£74.40 with delivery
I'm happy with that! Cheers for that dude!! 8)

Having read another clutch thread on here I thought now would be a good time to bump this post, I think the prices have dropped slightly too.

Cheers dude, ordered one a few months ago, great service etc and cheap to boot :mrgreen:

Would this kit fit my 1970 US 1600? Just about to order one from vw heritage, but remembered this thread?

I'm sure it would. You just need to make sure you get the right tap, pad or no pad. In theory a 70 should be the pad type but these things can be changed over the years. Have you had the engine out before?

Not yet I haven't, I'm hoping to get it out before next weekend to do the rear main seal, obviously il throw a clutch in whilst I'm there. Do you reckon it's best to wait til it's out then?

If you are in no rush then I would. If the gearbox has been changed or modified in the past then it wont necessarily match with the model year.

I'm gonna be fitting a new clutch when I get my new engine next month,

My bus was built October '70 and registered in '71.

What clutch kit should I be going for??

Cheers!

That would be a 71 model year so I would have thought the later type. Again though, if you can pull the engine and then order that would be the best method.

Quick bump for this :) prices have gone up since the initial post but still cheaper than the vw suppliers
