Hi
I want to remove the engine diagnosis plug/socket in engine bay 1972.
Is it just a case of tracing wires back and stripping them out,or is there more to it
ie looping some wires back in,connecting some back together,or even better does any one know of a how to do thread
Cheers...Dave

Steve that doings is black with chrome surround not chrome, yours if you want it ,and i got £40.00 for the panels :) .yes its sunny but I can't be arsed so doing a bit of research

We fitted a alternator to the bay a few weeks back and removed a bunch of wires to the socket. literally cut them off the socket end and removed the wires from the alternator, regulator and battery.

So pretty much just trace them back, looking at the wiring diagrams it is like a whole second loom!

halfpint-fighter could you post that wireing diagram up please,Ive only got haynes diagram and it doesn't show anything.

much appreciated if you could....cheers Dave

As I understand it all the "computer" diagnosis did was to check/apply power to various parts of the circuit.
You also needed a punch card to put in the machine to identify the options you had fitted so the machine could test it correctly.

Cheers loxy, veedub man 3 just printed them off. Aircooled rookie I believe the plugs are now obsolete "some one correct me if im wrong" But the way I see it the less wires the better :)

You've got the basic idea.

In truth the Volkswagen Diagnostic Computer was not a computer in the sense we use that word today. The difference between it and a the computer you are now using is akin to the difference between a rock and a ballistic missile. It could only give out a "+" or "-" reading. The total number of separate tests was around 72 (the actual number varied for each model of vehicle being tested - and you are spot-on about the plastic "software" cards - not too many folks know about them) but the interesting thing is that half of these "tests" were simply technician observation. The technician would check the brake lining, for example, and then enter a "+" or a "-" via a handheld input device.

In actuality the Computer Diagnostic system was more of a marketing gimmick than an aid to servicing the cars.

The July/August issue 36 copy of VW Camper & Commercial has a picture on page 33 of an old advert showing the diagnosis machine...what a beast!

It even has an oscilloscope and lot's of buttons 8)

DONE... just the blue/white wire left, this runs the full length of the van.
Going to leave this in as I may use this later.....

All this ^^^ came out of the engine bay, from the back lights to the starter motor.Quite a simple job considering how much I stripped out ( I have no engine and gearbox fitted),going to get some shrink wrap to go over the spade connectors where I had to cut the wires off and repair the joints in the harness.Every joint was bonded so you have to cut this open and seperate the wires so you can pull them through.Im happy :D and its got to be safer with all these wires out

Did the same to mine a little while back, have you disconnected the blue/white wire up front? what were they connected to as I havent done that bit yet (still building my engine).
