Hello,

Has anybody taken off the fabric shroud around the heater channel under the car?
Was it difficult to put it back together with the ziplock seal? would you recommend not to take it off?

I'd like to inspect for rust, do a rust conversion and paint...

Cheers.

Andy

Mine broke along that seal when I removed it, so I just tie wrapped it multiple times along its length when I put it back. Well worth taking off cos its a water trap.

Thanks rlepecha, I thought i'd be good to check/convert rust under there, but worried the old plastic would break and let more water in. Will give it a go i guess.

and tips?

Cheers.

Andy

I had a new heater pipe welded in last year as the old one had rotted and been replaced with a plastic tube! I painted the new one with black hammerite and was looking at adding some insulation, but I think that it will only cause rust problems again because of the position under the van.
If you use waterproof plastic type insulation it will act as a water trap as water ingress is bound to happen. Anything that's not waterproof will absorb water and hold it against the pipe.

So I've just left it as it is for now.

I don't think it would let more water in if you left it open or tie wrapped it like I have done. The main issue is the water can get in at either end but can't get out, I have left the split towards to bottom so water can drain back out.

Hi Mike,

That's a good point about keeping water there.
Do you get warm air by your feet when it's cold if you don't have insulation?

Cheers

A

yes still get warm air which is usually enough when it's cold. However I don't drive it in the winter.
