My bus has holes in it for the aluminium trim around the middle but the trim is missing. 3 of the rear windows have trim and quarter opening windows and the other is none opening but still with trim.

Just checking my chassis number and the second digit is a 2. According to JK website 2 is for microbus and 4 is for deluxe.

1. Panel van
2. Microbus 7/9 seater
3. Kombi i.e. van with windows
4. Deluxe microbus 7/9 seater
6. Pickup
7. Crewcab

Does this mean that originally my van did not have these aluminium trimmings?

as far as i'm aware, i think all microbusses started off as deluxe models. although i could be wrong.

the window that doesn't open is because it would get in the way of the sliding door if it opened.

the trim should be on all windows too, including windscreen & rear window.

It doesn't have to be a delux to have trim fitted, mines a caly import ,it had belt line trim and delux window seals but its just a micro bus ,hope this helps :)

As one of the Partners in Chrome committee the decision is that if your bus has the trim it is a deluxe and you can add the Partner in Chrome tag to your posts. Welcome!

If the holes are there, add the trim. It'll be less hassle than filling the holes in...plus is looks ace ;)

what did having a deluxe get you apart from the trim?

Does the heater going through the bulk heads behind the seat have anything to do with deluxe?

No, that's a bog standard microbus feature as well. I think it was mainly trim extras that made it a deluxe, chrome strips on the interior panels, chrome bits for the interior handles, chrome vw badge, that sort of thing. I think they eventually dropped the '4' in the chassis number and used an M code to designate a deluxe, so yours could be a deluxe with a '2' and the M code, although that might only be on later vans, can't remember.

having a good scout aroud there doesn't seem to be specific 'deluxe' package, there isn't much info to read as far as broucure info goes, the samba has many but doesn't give you a list of deluxe differences.

so maybe there was a base deluxe then everything was optional from then on?

for example the sunroof, overiders, bumper trim etc

mine has the sunroof but no bumper trim, deep headlining, padded dash chrome window/light surrounds opening quarterlights etc etc like most do but what differentiates a deluxe or not a deluxe is the question? ;)

link to 'deluxe' thread in history section

have a look on the samba under archives, they have some brochure on there to look at

A 2 code is a microbus, it's only a deluxe if it's a 4.

A US spec bus is just a microbus that had chrome trim, unless it has the correct chassis number, it's not a deluxe no matter how much trim it has.

standard deluxe type24 (until 74)

sunroof from april 68 until start of 74 year
chrome trim on belt line
chrome on window rubbers
chrome trim front vent surround
chrome front badge
chrome winders and door handles inside until model year 74 pull strap til 72
rub strips on bumpers
clock
opening front quarterlights
3 part jailbar set in rear
chrome beauty rings on wheels and hubcaps
trim panels had a different colouring on seats and mats to standard and US standard (brown mostly i think)
two tone paint

US standard microbus (type 22)

chrome trim on belt line
chrome on window rubbers
chrome trim front vent surround
chrome front badge
chrome winders and door handles inside until model year 74 pull strap till 72
opening front quarterlights
two tone paint
chrome hubcaps

normal standard microbus had none of these, apart from maybe up to 70 had chrome handles and winders inside, but all micro's had the fresh vents on doors for the rear and full headlining
