Hi,

I have been building a motor, I have just come to put the distributer drive shaft into place, I got it in no problem but it doesn't appear to be lining up, I thought it may be a tooth out but it lines up in reverse (not straight)?! Is this normal, can anyone clarify If it is incorrect or normal to be offset? Just seems to be way out.

I have taken some photos below:

Any help much appreciated.

I'm not 100% sure as it's been ages since I did this but isn't it supposed to be horizontally across the engine with the smaller cut out bit closest to the fly wheel and the fatter bit facing the pully wheel ? It does twist as it goes in which you have to take into account . Think it too me 3 or 4 attemps to get it right . I may be wrong as I'm no engine. Builder but remember reading it when I had a bash at building mine .

I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at, but are you aware that the distributor will only go in one way, and cannot be rotated 180 degrees? You can see in your picture of the drive notch that it is machined slightly off centre so that you can't accidentally re-install the distributor with the timing 180 degrees out. Does this help with part of your problem or have I missed your point?

silly question but the pulley hits TDC twice ion rotating the engine are you certain its the right TDC.

I know this as have done the same myself in the past.

I worked out TDC from the valves to find the firing stroke, I have now fitted a different shaft from another motor and it lines up much better. Thanks for the replies :)
