Have noticed a strong petrol smell since buying my bus at the weekend. Had a quick look today and noticed some small drips on the carb - I checked the pipes either side of the filter but they seem fine.

Is this normal, or do I have a problem? Any ideas or help very much appreciated.

Hi mate, is it coming off the main shaft?

What model of carb is it. It will probably need new bush's

Just been for another drive and checked for drips, seemed ok this time? Another question, should the filter be full of fuel? Mine seems to be pretty much empty - its pretty jumpy to drive, could i have fuel starvation? sorry if all this is covered in another post...

My filter is never full so wouldnt worry about that. If it's a bit jumpy it could be an air leak on the carb. If fuel is getting out then im guessing air can get it. there's plenty of info on re-building the carb. Buy a kit from heritage etc. Have a look on http://www.vw-resource.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for step by step guide to re-furbing the carb.

Will make a massive difference.

cool, sounds good to me, thanks for the advice....although I think i'd make a right mess of it. Still can at least I can sound slightly knowledgeable when I take it t be sorted.

There should be no escaping fuel ..... for starters the filter is on the feed from the pump to the carb....try relocating it onto the feed to the pump, ideally in a secure position away from any ignition sources, if the main shaft is worn then it will let air in and run like **** give it a waggle (technical i know) and gauge the free movement you'll have an idea if its excessive its not rocket science....if its excessive then you'll need to re-bush it and you may as well refurb the carb from there ......
