Having just checked my dynamo as the generator warning light was staying on, I have found the brushes were sticking. Is there supposed to be some sort of cover over the brush appertures?

No there's not a cover over the brushes. They need to be open for cooling I think.

Are you sure they were sticking rather than reaching the end of their service life?

They should stick out well above their metal retainers.

you should get at least 14V from the DF post and earth. There's loads of info on here about this topic.

Agreed. No need to dismantle. Even done them at the side of the road once.

Just a small but significant correction:
you should get at least 14V from the D+ post
