Hi folks, my 68 bay failed mot last year on the headlights working the wrong way round, although they missed it on retest so the lights are still wrong. Yes it's mot time again so need to fix but can't make sense of the Haynes manual. Any ideas please?

I am basing this on my RHD early bay. Check everything is the correct way up. The headlamp reflector must have the sidelight bulb at the bottom and the lens should be level with the arrow on the glass (if it is original Hella) pointing at the passenger side. Now check the bulb is the correct way up. The bulb has a pair of small spikes that locate into a notch on the holder. My drivers side one was upside down and lit up the sky on dip and pointed at the road on main beam.

Also make sure that each headlight has all four of its retaining clips and the adjusters work properly. If having them apart, it may be worth getting new seals as well. They are a pain to put together and need some force. Sometimes it is easier to put the retaining clip on an easy to reach area and slide it around the rim (ooh matron!) to its proper location.

This is quite a good video on how it all fits together.

What do you mean 'working the wrong way round'?

Do you mean the blue light is illuminated when you're on dipped beam, and not when on main beam?

Or do you mean the lights are pointing the wrong way somehow?

:)

Has someone removed the three pin plug from the rear of the lights? This might have been done to enable the wiring to be pushed back through the headlight bowls during a respray for example. The wires could have been put back the wrong way.

Sorry to clarify the dip beam is on when blue light shows and beam is on the main setting/road position and vice versa so suspect wrong wiring but don't want to swap with no idea what am doing!!!!!! Due to past experience and a burnt out electronic ignition!!!!

I have checked my headlights and they are Bosch with the sidelights at the top!!
The three pin will only fit one way so can't swap the wires round that way

You can remove the individual wires from the three pin plug and put them back in the wrong slots. Should be brown on the right as you are looking at the slots of the plug, yellow or yellow/black at the top.
Might be worth checking.

Well having watched the video a couple of times I have turned the inside of the lights around which has turned the bulb 180deg as the notch was at the top not the bottom. Now the battery is flat!!!!!!! But having a closer look at the rear and front sills the headlights are a minor problem!! Not looking good for Cornwall 2014. Thanks for the advice I think it is sorted:-/

As Mike says - look behind the dash and swap the connectors over between the main beam and dipped lights, might be a simple fix for your issue
