Hi.... I'm feeling a camplete failure with regards my van.... I have spent so much time and money (and love.... sweat.... no tears yet!!), but am close to admitting defeat!!!!

Last year, I had a knocking sound when cold, which I'm fairly sure was right cylinder head being loose. I took the opportunity to learn!!!..... I took the engine out and have used every forum advise and book to take the engine out and rebuild. I have reused pistons and rings, but did split the case and put new bearings on both main and camshaft. The right cylinder head was loose.... not to the torque that the left was, so feeling my original diagnostics correct.

.... the rebuild went well, engine re–installed, and within 40 seconds on the key the engine sprang into life. Indeed although the engine still on axle stands the engine sounds strong and sounds good..... other than a horrible knocking sound.....

The sound is coming from the main pulley area.... I've (from previous forum posts) thought it was a loose fan belt.... wrong fan belt.... sheared dyno pulley key.... to a potential warped main pulley. I've replace all in this area, and still I'm getting a knocking sound from behind the crankshaft pulley.

I've tried listening to Jon Muirs sounds http://www.ratwell.com/mirror/Muir/Muir.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and it sounds most like the 'broken crankshaft' or the 'loose flywheel'..... I don't know what to do next..... I'm thinking of just giving up as I haven't the time, inclination (or money!) now to try to stumble in the dark learning or guessing what to do....

My concern is that actually I've NOT got a problem, and this is just a VW fable, not that I can read or find such anywhere else...... but the engine actually runs and revs like it's never done so before. Potentially I could just learn to live with it?!! .... I know that this is not the answer! I've got zero mile on the engine, so don't know really if I should or should not even be driving it to get an MOT?

I live in the Newmarket area..... whilst the van was my project to learn, I'm giving up..... but any suggestions other than crush the bloody thing..... I am admitting defeat, but who do I turn to..... anyone than can offer me advise of who to look at it (or just tow the bloody thing off my driveway!) please? Are there any mobile mechanics in the area that can come and listen and offer advise? Realistically I know it's an engine out job but while I now know how to do this, whats the point in me doing that when I've now zero idea of what I'm looking for?!!

Feeling really negative.... any advise gratefully received.....

He is at Kennyhill, about 15 miles from Newmarket, you would not find a better bloke to give you a straight answer.
Hope he can help you.
Elliott.

When you rebuilt the engine did you lap the barrels into the cylinder heads? Have you run the engine up to its running temp? And is the noise constant, ie, is it worse when you rev the engine or is it constant? There are a lot of things it could be.
Flywheel loose. If this was so it would self distruct very quickly
Incorrect Bearings. It is a possibility I have see this many times.
Piston Rings, these can easily be broken during assembley. Was there a significant ridge at the top of the bore?
Cam followers, fitting them back in a different position can give you a noise.
Valve clearances, have they been checked, they can go very loose after the first running of an Engine.
Camshaft rivits loose, not unheard of for this to happen after being disturbed.
Give me a ring if you cannot get it sorted I am in Wisbech. Robert
