I've got a 69 bay with a twin port 1641 engine and after a long time off due to medical reasons and being uber eager to sort my van out and get running properly after a year on running like a sack of s**t :msn4:
Done loads of things but ended up stripping the heads down to find a crack in both the heads so bought a top end rebuild kit from megabug and fitted the heads new pistons tops and refitted the engine after finding out after I had fitted it that I forgot a bit of tin wear DOH so it will have to be refitted asap lol but I thought I would at least see if it was running better after all I had completed the refit so connected its battery up and turned him over started up after a few turn overs so was well pleased :)
But after a few seconds I heard a loud pop I didn't think to much of it till I got to the back and it had spat oil every where out the filter housing (ive got a relocated oil filter and cooler) so turned it off and checked the oil level there was still abit on the dipstick so I no it hadn't all come out and had a look at the filter and it had popped the rubber seal out the side which I was sure I had tightened the filter up but I put it down to me not tightening it enough so retried it again new oil and new filter and I defo made sure I had tighten it this time and started up first time again and sound a lot better than last year and then I heard that loud pop again and checked again and it had spat it dummy out and oil every where again. I looked in side this filter and it was a lot worse than the last 1 it looked like it was crushed from the inside and the rubber ring seat had pushed outwards so the filter had come away from the housing about 5mm but was still connected :? I was so confused and didn't no where to turn next looked in to it on this forum and people are saying oil pressure relief valve is to blame
has anyone else had this problem and no any other things it could be just 1 thing after another with it at the min lol any help would be mint thanks a lot :msn4:

What filter is it? And yes a pressure relief valve would cause that. Do you have an oil thermostat or sandwich plate?

If in doubt put an oil pressure gauge on it to see what pressure your getting. That will tell you if the release valve is stuck giving very high pressure or whether its normal pressure blowing a bad filter.

... the crappy repro "HP1's" ...

Anyway of telling the repro v the real ones?

is this the same as the orange fram filters?

Bought one at volksworld last year and thought it looked a bit different I.e the orange colour was lighter and the black labelling was a bit faded.

the 1st one was a fram filter and the 2nd 1 was a wir filter but ive just ordered a filter from JK a orange fram filter says this is a bit more capable to handle more pressure so gonna try that

im abit confused I don't no wat ive got wats the difference?
:?

oil lines around the wrong way maybe.....

I have had this happen with the crappy repro "HP1's" The threads are not "Perfect" and with the pressure of heavy/cold oil it can just force them off.....

I had it happen twice exactly as you describe so I went and brought a Mk1 Golf filter (same fitment) and it was fine after that....

the oil lines at the filter?? do u no the route the oil pipes should take? at the filter??

ive ordered a mk1 golf orange fram filter so gonna try that

ive unscrewed the oil pressure release valve today and it came out really easy so its not seized or anything,, that is the long springed 1 but on looking under the van there looks like there is another big screw the oil pressure control valve could this caused it :?:

So was everything ok, then the van has stood for a bit, and now it's blowing out the oil filter?

it was ok on that side of things not blowing filter just had knackered heads but it was running a orange from filter and was ok just kept losing power

The one you checked governs flow through the oil cooler. The other governs overall pressure.

You can see how they work in this diagram.

Had similar with the 2276cc but it was on start up when new and when it was very cold so very thick oil,

It was due to using chepaer golf filters for the run in period, put a decent HP1 on and didn't have any further issue.

Also seen it happen to a mates car when he plummed it round the wrong way, blew the oil filter to bits and another time saw a cooler blow too. Sounds silly but do check things are the right way round.

Sandwich plate, mounts on the filter head and the filter screws onto that, can get thermostat controlled versions too, got 1 on my 2110.

In-line oil thermostat, when up to temp it opens and allows oil into external cooler.
