mine was missing so got a few bits, flaps bar ,spring thermostat and rod,put it together
and the bar at the back when on one set of flaps wont fit on the other,so i thought i might be missing a bit,but the BOOK says iam not :?

Hi Robins

I will try to explain how the flaps fit to your fan housing.

One set of flaps should have a link for the push rod these go on the rhs as you look at the rear of the engine ie not from the fly wheel side. The link bars that come out the back should have the joggle down.

Right before you fit the rhs flaps connect the push rod this hangs down and in board, out of the fan housing threaded end attaches to the thermostat rod should be to front of vehicle when fitted.

Bolt the flap assemble to the fan housing loosley.

Fit the lhs flaps as the rhs only link bars should have the joggle up.

LH and RH flaps are different make sure you have a set and not two of one side, and flaps differ from single port to twin port engines.

Now you will be able to fit the connecting bar/plate this goes one the blind side of the fan housing (blind side is the hidden side when engine fitted) secure this in place with the special coil springs or clips (these are the same sort as used on the cab heater control linkages).

Last thing to fit is the fail safe spring this hooks in to the connecting bar near the center and the other end goes into the small stamped loop in the fan housing.

Now tighten the screws that hold the flaps into the fan housing, check every thing works freeley by pushing the thermostat rod, if there is any thing more that a slight bind adjust the flaps positions until the open easily and close without you pulling the rod.

When you fit the fan housing to your engine make sure the thermostat rod goes between the cylinders not through the hole in the head.

If you still stuck drop me a PM and I will give you my phone details. Also try this web site http://www.vagcat.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; you need to register (its free), there are some diagrams showing the flap assemblies but not how to fit them, alternativly search the technical form for a thread called "How does the thermostat work?"

Dude if you can pop over to temple cloud on saturday im sure one of us will be able to sort it for you

Do you have any pictures of what you have?

I suspect you have a singleport connecting arm with a twinport cylinder head, or something.

I've scoured my photobucket, but no pictures I'm afraid.

thanks evryone for the help, here are a few pics been told its a single port

thanks for that, mine is the same but when together they dont move,
need abit of bending here there

Rich

if you intend you use a thermostat you need to get the link rod connected before you put the flaps in the fan housing.

Try linking every thing up before you tighten any fixing screws, had to mess around with the fit a of mine a little to get them working smoothly.
