That sounds like you are ragging the tits off it, and like it isn't set up right.

What distributor do you have fitted?

When was it last (fully) serviced?

75 in 4th is tops really. My '71 can pull 25mph on fourth gear in the flat. Yours should too unless you have a different (non stock) gearbox...

i think its all standard.
i had it serviced about a month ago.
but it is going in next week before bug jam just so i know i can get there.

hows yours drive 1st 2nd 3rd ect

1st up until about 10mph, 2nd up to 20-25, 3rd up until about 30-35 normally.
Slightly faster if I'm in a hurry...
I've been told I drive like an old man though.

Any pics of your engine?

Driven as above, I get close to 30mpg...

gear ratio for 3rd is 1.26 to 1 and 4th is 0.82 to 1 for a standard box

so for same rpm you should see 1.26/0.82 more mph in top compared to 3rd, about 61 mph if you see 40 in 3rd

if you are pulling 75 in top at same rpm as 40 in third sounds like you have a freeway flier box, ie a tall ratio on 4th, normally a desirable mod.

you probably need a bit more grunt to cope even if your standard motor is in reasonable condition, probably why your motor wants to run near the top of the torque curve in top, there will be loads of experts on here to tell you how to do this, but I found a big improvement in tractability just by fitting twin ICTs to a standard 1600 twinport (on standard ratios though)

that a new one on me but it sounds about right.
is there any way of finding out if i have one of those freeway flier boxes?

thanks

If you havent got a rev counter, fit a rev limiting rotor arm then you can tell if you are giving it too much stick in each gear as it will cut out at 4500rpm.
