Went to get Beeglebus out of the garage this morning, gave the accelerator pedal a boot to start it and 'twang' went the cable

'Oh bother' I said. Or words to that effect....

At least it didn't go when I was miles from home though, so shouldn't grumble really....

Anyway, it's snapped off at the carb linkage end. It has broken right out of the thin metal sleeve that goes into the linkage.

So, when I come to fit a new one, apart from having to jack the bus up, take the front belly pan off etc, what's the best way to replace the old one?

I don't suppose for one minute it's a simple as attaching the new one to the old one and just pulling it through...

Any tips/advice guys and girls?

Carole

When we did it on haveacampers van it was pretty simple, just pulled old one out, then pushed new one in, might get caught near the rear where the solid conduit changes to flexible but this can be removed & then you can feed the cable into the flexible and refit.

You shouldn't have to jack up the van to do the cable. Pull the old one out, attach the new one to the pedal end and push it up the tube, making sure you grease the length of the cable as you go. Plenty of grease is the key to success.

WHS^^^^ I had alot of problems getting mine through the last foot or so!! Had to take the flexi tube off and bore out the hole as it was covered in crap! Then i found it was trial and error getting it through the back of the tinware but with a bit of patience and trial and error it got sorted!!

Give it agood grease up and slide it on thru!!!

Depends how low it is

Well put it this way, last week I had to jack it up a bit so I could adjust the clutch cable, still had the tyres on the ground but needed to lift it up by about 4 inches to get underneath it properly......

I've done short term fix using an electrical connection box and a piece of thick wire for now, next week I'm taking it down to a mate's yard with a pit so I can get underneath it properly and fit a new cable. Can't wait....

Thanks for all the advice guys, appreciated...

That's what I like to see, someone else getting all mucky under my van

Actually I did get my hands dirty as I was chief trolley jack and axle stand operator. Oh, and I made the tea.

As with all bus things, nothing was straightforward. Despite having at least 4 new accelerator cables knocking about the place, they were all too short   which naturally we didn't discover until after fitting the first one...

Completely threw us for a while, could the van be three inches longer than all other vans we asked ourselves.... :? :?

er, no. Actually 1971 vans have a one-year-only length accelerator cable, depending on whether it was made before or after august of that year, which we finally found out after spending half an hour on the 'phone. And naturally no-one had one in stock and very rarely do  . Marvellous.

So we ended up using the front third of the existing one and the rear two thirds of a new one, joined up by a connector. Not particularly pretty, but it works.

So if you have a 71 van, next time you're at a show, get a spare cable, because sods law when it snaps, no-one will have one...and you'll be walking home

Great  did you discover why the difference in length?

No.....it's an odd one really, I can't figure it out

the van is LHD so if anything you'd assume the cable would in fact be shorter as the accelerator pedal is nearer the middle of the van than in a RHD, and the carb linkage is in the middle of the engine bay for all vans, so that wouldn't affect it.

I can only assume it's got something to do with the either positioning of the pedal or the path of the cable ??

Doubtless someone on here will be able to enlighten us....

oh well at least I know now just need to keep my eyes open for another oddity to get in case of emergency.... and helen thought shed be getting her utillity room back....
