Think about it................would a splitty be a splitty if the "V" was removed. The grill is part of the look for me (ie grill no indicators) If your going to fill it/weld it you might as well get a later bay and ruin that instead.
Its everyone to there own, but if i was going to take away an early bays identity and customize it i would condider buying a late bay instead. (thats just my opinion)

fair point, but if you remove a splitty V then it is mainly a different model, i.e closer to an earlybay. Where as if you remove the grill on a bay, its still a bay. Does that mean if you take a tyre off the front and mount it somewhere else that it wasnt fitted to, have you ruined it? No is the answer, its just a different version of a classic shape. :D (My own opinion of course  )

Does my van look less of an earlybay because of the grill being removed?

Id only ever mount the spare wheel in its intended position which is in side the van in the spare wheel recess! To be honest im not a fan of filled in grills, repositioned/different indicators or the smooth look in general but thats just me. I think all bays be it early or late look less of a bay with these "custom" details, so the answer to your last question is Yes.
The question posted was grill or no grill, and i said Grill and gave my reasons why. They are neither right or wrong but just my thoughts on the matter.

Why not fit a customised grill?
Seen a few where people have had grilles machined in whatever style they liked, think these look cool.
You get to keep the grill but with yuor own design

im really not a fan of those custom grills especially the bling shiny ones i think they look like

Not a fan myself, but there is the odd one or two looks okay. :D

As for the grill or no grill thing, its just what works on what bus. Ithink if youve lowered your bus more than the norm then you are going for a custom look already so some things really set it off, but then again a slammed stock bus looks sick  i dunno grill or no grill it will look cool but personally no grill on a slammed bus rules

Seems a bit of an emotive issue this one.

My opinion (and that's all it is) on all aircooled VWs is that you won't go wrong if you leave the body the way it left the factory. By all means mess around with the mechanicals, ride height and wheels (bolt on stuff of course) - but don't mess the body up. I can't see a demand for de-seamed bugs, flared arches (or snoklestang - see pictures below) etc. today, but they have been popular at some stage. Same goes for volksrods - popular today, but they'll be tomorrow's Bajas.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the look of some customns and can certainly appreciate the creative side to them. But would I own one, no - just not my thing.

You can't go wrong with leaving the grille on - you can if you decide to get rid of it (though it CAN look good without).

Oh my God - that is gorgeous! It's my dream car - do you know if it's for sale?

;)

get to the back of the queue - first refusal's all mine (only when the owner dies you understand - you don't let these ones slip through your fingers)

Maybe someone will bring out a plain grille without any louvres in it, it will give a smoother appearance without any need to fill or mod the front end and if you decide to go back to original you just swap back. Have it so you can clip it in place so you dont see any screw heads.

if every show you went to just had stock looking vws in stock looking colours would they still have the same appeal? NO is the answer, its the variation that makes the show what it is and the people that drive them. So my point is this, Stock grille looks good, shiny grille looks good and no grille looks good, as i said before prefer a grille on MINE and remember that variety is the spice of life........... :D

I swear i've seen one like this somewhere before.. Maybe it was a custom job.. I think theres a custom grille maker on flebay, ask them, they'd probably do it.

Chill grills.... they do the shows too.... give em your design and they'll knock it up laser cut stainless steel....
