I'm replacing the rear shoes on my '72 n/s all went in fine but o/s I had to replace the wheel cylinder as well, put it back together but the hand brake cable arm is being pushed into the hub by the top spring behind it, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong :? any advise gratefully accepted.

This is how it should look when correctly assembled

Mine are slightly different to that, the bar that goes across the shoes at the top is fitted by a pivot to the hand brake lever and slides on another pivot on the other shoe, its as though the back of the pivot is rubbing against the spring pushing the arm out and the end is rubbing the back of the hub, if that makes sense.

To para phrase Morcombe & Wise, you have all the right bits but not in the right order. What you have should lookm like my first picture. The lower spring is on the wrong side of the brake shoes as per picture. The circlip on the RH shoe should not be there and the brace bar should lay flat as in my first picture. Make yours look like the picture and it will all work fine. And the handbrake lever should be in the top hole as per picture.

Thanks, but the brace bar wont fit flat as it only has slot at one end the other end splits with a hole through for the pivot.

Then you have the wrong brace bar. It should have a slot at both ends and one end will have 2 steps which goes to the handbrake lever and the shoe. I'll take another picture of what I have in the workshop and post it back which will give you a better idea how it should look.

Look at this fiche it will show, I hope what I'm trying to say.

OK this is a very late Bay/Type 25 self adjuster bar but the ends are the same as your bar and this how the ends of yours should look.

You've got the oddball '72 brakes. It's possible change everything over to the later type '73 on,easier to get bits.

Sorted I think, Clarkson you were right about the handbrake bar being in the top hole, I went out and refitted both sides and everthing seems to fit right, started to get dark so adjusting and bleeding will have to wait for the morning.
Thanks for your help it is much appreciated :D

Well got it finished today  bled the brakes and adjusted the shoes, so that's a job ticked off the pre mot list .
This is why I love this forum, the effort others are willing to put in to help someone with a problem it really does feel like a club with members looking out for each other.
Thanks again.
