ive recently been looking at buying a new home cinama package,so of i go to comet to see which one i want.I right down the serial number go home type it in to the net and as usual amazon is the cheepest, but not by a 5er , £140 cheeper, the item was £500 at comet.thats a good saving .

so who uses these shops other than just to look at the product?

mabee people use the staff to find out more about the product.but saying that, when i was buying a pc and asking for advice the chap dident seem to have a clue.so that rules that out as an advantage

you get the same after service as them, it arrives next day.

is it just people that dont have the internet?,if so how long can these buisnesses stay open :? :?

if i wasent competative in my work id be tits up in a month

You get them to price match / undercut, theyre starting to do it to internet prices now.....

I had the same with mine

and still got it £20 cheaper in the shops......

the assistant even legged it down the street to make sure I wasnt telling porkies though he forgot to ask abou the availability....

It's not that people don't have the internet it's more down to internet-shopper fear.

I work for a business that has over 100 travel shops and also have various websites selling holidays and you'd be amazed at the %age of shoppers that still prefer to buy holidays sat in front of a desk.

Obviously marketing helps but people tend to do what they're used to, without wanting to generalise you find that the majority of people under 30-40 prefer to buy things on the internet because they have grown up in a computerised generation, whereas the majority of people over 30-40 prefer to buy things from shops.

I hope that hasn't come across as ageist as I said it's a brief overview and obviously varies from person to person and the product in question they are buying.

on comets web site it says they will not price match unless its a shop within so many miles  what a joke

I mainly use shops for having a good look and feel of a product. Then i try and search for cheaper prices on the interweb. Not that i buy much these days, this vw thing on the drive eats my money.

I think it's also because people like my mum exist. She used to always be taken in by whatever supposed 'offers' they would have on and think she was getting a great deal just because the nice man in currys said so.

I've finally managed to get through to her now and last week she got the nice man in currys to demonstrate a plasm telly for her and then she went straight to costco and got it for 400 quid cheaper. She's a quick learner my mum

I suppose it's the same as like when you see something and think "who on earth is ever going to buy that!" But people will. Dancing flowers for goodness sake! We can't help it, we just can't resist buying stuff we don't need and we'll pay an arm and a leg for them as well.

The world is full of people like my mum . Aaaaaaargh!

I agree - I only ever use these shops to ogle the goodies and get a demo...
But I've got a good tip for you - shops like Comet etc won't often do you a discount anymore unless you take out the 'insurance' with the item... tell them you want the insurance if they'll take £££'s off the price, buy it at the discounted price, then cancel the insurance policy (you get a 7 day cooling off period, that's the law!) - you're quids in!!!

;)
