Hi all,

i was thinking about getting a new carb after having hot start probs, and i was told that it wasnt worth rebuilding mine as it was "a bit worn".???????.(any ideas) ........but im not sure i want to replace with an aftermarket carb and junk the German one, so im thinking for the cost of a kit it must be worth a go at rebuilding mine.....do you think its something a complete novice could do????....i have found an old volksworld with a how to step by step (they always make things look easy) diagram and the kit comes with an exploded diagram......am i being a bit ambitious thinking i could do this ?.... or will it just cost me more money to sort out after if i mess it up???

honest opinions please

cheers.................................kev :D

Can you tie up your own shoe laces?
Can you undo them before removing your shoes?

If the answer to both above is yes - then you can do it ;)
Only bit that is a bit more complex is if you need it to be rebushed - but once disassembled you could get someone to do that for you.

hmmmm rebushed?......... now that scares me, how would i know if i needed this?.........i think your reply has answered my question i think im a bit out of my depth here

thanks for replys.......................kev

A carb rebuild on a solex is straightforward just take note of where things like spring go as you take it apart, lay the parts out on a work bench in the order they go back together.

Cleaning is the hard part especially if you dont have access to compressed air, run loads of carb cleaner through the drillings.

The only thing thats a bit more involved is rebushing the throttle shaft if the main body is worn and the throttle shaft has up and down or side to side play, if it has you need to get it sorted or it will draw in air, and lean the fuel mixture which will make the engine run hot.

Hi!

I am sure it's a DIY thing, like noddy said, rebushing is the worse job, but easilly do-able, and the bushes are a tenner on Ebay. And the satisfaction of doing it yourself is priceless. I have a spare carb now i have replaced my old one with a new Brosal for the time being, so fully intend to rebuild mine sometime - and if you wanna practice, i have a spare for sale ! ;)
The full carb gasket is not to expensive either.
Give it a bash on a spare one, you won't be without the van then. A ultrasonic bath would clean the old one a treat too. Maybe yellow pages for that, unless you know a friendly dentist?!

Cheers!

the very first thing i did on a VW :D . I did find it really easy and you usually get a good exploded diagram with the refurb kits (@£18)

I soaked everything in 'Gunk' over night and used a compressor to 'blow it out'.

if you do buy a 34 pict 3 refurb kit, dont panic if you think the float needle valve is totally different from your OGee one.. they improved the design and it fits just the same as the old one
