I know we're all a bit obsessed with our vans but I was flicking through last month's Volksworld and I reckon somebody went a bit far. Bob Shaill comments on a photo of a student protest in Brazil in the '70s.
A hairy youth can be seen kicking in the roof of an overturned Police van, fair enough given that the dictatorship in Brazil at the time was so undemocratic that they even imprisoned and exiled musicians who were critical of government policies. Bob notes that the van was a 1964 split which had most of its panels kicked in and windows smashed and finishes with," I'm sorry to say that it was later set on fiire and totally destroyed".
Obviously it would be better if the police forces doing the dirty work for the dictators of the world drove crappy vans but surely, in these extreme circumstances, battering VWs is acceptable and can even be applauded.
