Anyone care to comment on whether this is a Cross-over model please?
Its my father's 2nd Bay transporter bought new and registered 1st August 1971, KBJ 610K. The reason I ask is because it has the disc brakes, wider track and flared rear arches of the later 1972 models with the taller rear lights etc, and I've not seen a similar model in any of the VW books.

Taller rear lights? its got the moon air in take and smooth front arches, registered 1st of august 71 thats a 71 fella

Its a late early bay, if that makes sense!

Actually it does, my father's first bay was registered Nov 67 (an 'F' plate) purchased after the 1967 motor-show, this second one was described at the time as an updated model, but visually the only differences were the wheels and rear wheel arches. Looking back now over the full bay lifespan I the '72 model year is really the revised/updated model. So 'late 71, late early bay' sound good to me. Thanks.

Hi mate are you in the Ipswich / Suffolk area as your name and the Plate on the blue bus are both Ipswich suffixes ,Welcome to the site mate

It's not a Crossover IMHO, half-moon vents, small tail lights and flat front arches make it an Early Early!

Nice bus whatever though, do you know where it is now?

;)

Yep its identical to my 71, but if you look on the M plate you'll get the manufacture date which has to put it as a 71 as it was registered on the 1st of august.

Same as my '71 too.I call it an early bay for sure. There are a few that do call them crossovers though.

No, its not a cross over, its an early bay. But in the scheme of early bays, its as late as it gets (for this purpose Im not strictly including crossovers as early bays.... )

Complicated, isnt it ;)

I'm with Clem on this one:

It is an Early Bay, but it is a late Early Bay. The reasoning being:

So we have....

1. Pre August 68's - Really Early Bay.....Push button doors
2. Pre August 69's - Quite Early Bay......Still split pattern beam
3. Pre August 70's - Early Bay ...... Still wide five wheels
4. Pre August 71's - Late Early Bay.....Small five wheels/disc brakes and flared arches
5. Pre August 72's - Crossover Early Bay.....Flared front arches/Tall rear lights and sqare air intakes

JUST for FUN......I may be well off on this!!! :D

it is definitely an Earlybay, not a crossover. Any bay with the small back lights and half moon vents is early, whether it has discs up front or not

I dare say your dad got a discount on that bus. If it was registered 1st Aug 71 i would check the M plate for its build date. August is the start of the new model year and "72 Models" would have been available
Just to explain

Aug 1 1970- July 31 1971 = 71 Model year.
Aug 1 1971- July 31 1972 = 72 Model year.

Was it a Panel van when he got it?

Yes it was bought new as a Panel, and immediately converted by my Dad into a 2 berth motor-caravan; did the whole thing himself. including the rear headlining, cushions and curtains. He did the same on a 1967 model Bay too, but my brother and I grew too long for the beds so the 71 had beds which extended onto the engine 'hump'. A 6 foot bed is a tight fit if there is a solid rear seat backrest.
