I need some serious advice! Is there anyway to test whether my bus (1969 Baywindow with original 1600 engine) has ever been converted to unleaded. I've had it for 3 years and I really have no idea!
HELP

As above the heads dont require upgrading as they should be supplied with the hardened valve guides after a given date anyway

All VW heads after 1967 were designed to run on unleaded mainly because of the American market where leaded fuel was outlawed in 1973.

always run all my later dubs, including my 69 bus,on unleaded without problems,as has been said, after 67 they all had hardened valve seats.

one less thing to worry about! ;)

Ive always found a humourous irony in that to make an aircooled engine unleaded you should change the heads (or so we were originally sold/told), and the negative effect of not doing so? eventually we would have to replace our heads!

Its was a bigger con than the Y2K Millenium Bug! And some companies continue with the nonsense. One dealer still sells bags of magic lead balls at shows ...
