Hi All

My 1969 Westy just failed the MOT on several things, some of them I'm fine with but I need advice on the others.

1st the indicator won't stay down indicating left it works but won't stay in a downward position, I found a replacement with a slightly longer stalk that does stay in position but the garage said its wrong as it doesn't have as many wires, I tempted to believe that the garage thought it was too much bother to try but I don't know - ideas?

2nd I bought dropped spindles from transporterhaus and then got coil overs but I can't find out who I got them from, it wasn't transporterhaus or heritage and the bushes have gone, I don't know which bushes to buy for them or where to get them - ideas?

Thanks in advance for any and all help

PS does anyone know anyone good, cheap and reliable to work on the bus in the Preston area, I know its the holy grail but as Gandhi said if you don't ask you don't get!

Hurrah I figured out who I got the coil overs from and bushes are on there way

Still the indicator problem though any ideas, I'm loath to mess with it too much as it works to the right, full beam everything except holding down on the left - Help!

And still looking for a VW guru in Lancashire

Cheers

The indicators are recognisable by stalk type and the number of wires. I had a similar issue with mine as being a US bus it indicates right far more than left as they can pull out straight into traffic regardless of light colour when turning left.

Mines a Dec 70 bus has a chrome stalk and 8 wires

The are cams inside that wear and stop it from holding position. I tried filing mine back square with a needle file and made it better but not perfect. Bought a replacement of the samba that held, but when received it seemed it held more through dirt and dust than correct usage.

It also looks like they are riveted together so not the easiest thing to take apart. One day i'll take the time to actual take a proper look (maybe just after the next MOT)

dude we need to meet for a coffee :D i know someone who could assist VW wise, good friend of mines a vw wizz

Theres a guy in School Lane Bamber Bridge (school lane garage) thats good with old VW's he races them and is a judge at Tatton Park, he's mot'd mine for the last 6 years.

If your indicator won't stay down when trying to indicate left, try slackening the two screws a tad which clamp the indicator unit to the steering column, then easing the unit DOWN the column a little. Do the screws up again and test.
I had this problem (and MOT failure for it too). It was the self cancelling gizmo which kept 'cancelling' the left indication. Worked a treat -

I have the same issue with the indicator switch. I'm going to try rev-al's trick tomorrow - fingers crossed.

Karmann Konnection sell the switches but they're about £100 so been putting it off for a while

did you fix your indicator switch?

Just had a fiddle with mine and managed to get it to work a couple of times but now the headlight dip/main switch doesn't work and neither does the LH turn switch
