With rising fuel costs, is there anything that can be fitted that can improve the MPG of a stock bay engine?

KA on the front to tow it :D

Fitting Gas makes it cheeper if you use it alot, tuning every 2000 miles is always a good idea :D

hahahaha....YEAH!

I think its a number of things you can do people do say they get 30mpg out of there vans, but I don't think you could push to much more :D

Currently lpg seems the likeliest alternative to reduce your costs.....although an initial big outlay at current prices should be recouped fairly quick on a daily driver....

tie helium baloons to your left shoe

restrict the travel on the accelerator pedal

correctly set twin carbs (not HUGE ones) will reduce consumption a bit and add power, as the manifold length is reduced making for more efficient consumption

but of course they can use more fuel if you get seduced by the power and floor it all the time, likewise with a stocker, less acceleration and less heavy braking will reduce consumption

What good would that do? 8)

My clutchwork doesn't affect the MPG that much?

A sensible response now... people have been known to get 30+ mpg from bay windows. I think it is Clarkson, on Vzi, who gets a solid 32mpg from his, with twin 34ICTS.

34 Icts or 36 dells will probably boost the MPG if it is driven carefully.

:)

i have a nice set of genuine 36 webbers which will be refurbed by Mark at http://www.carburetorclinic.com/services.htm :D

I just got up it was a long night and you wouldnt believe how long i had to think abut it.......

you ****

get back to your revision you scrounging student

No come 20:00 its all automatic from that point till I get home.....I need to win the lottery and give up commuting into london :(

So what do you plan on doing with your education....not gonna do what my inlaw did and throw it away and get an unrelated ocupation (she joined the old bill with a crappy 2:2 in sports :? )

You gotta run away from bad guys in the old bill so a 2:2 in sports is a good thing :D

How did students get on here anyway :?

I hope I'll do something related to my degree (to be..) - I'm studying Mechanical Engineering so pretty appropriate for jobs which I reckon will be fun :)

Your commute sounds horrible though :( - I don't think I'd be able to cope with driving anywhere every morning.

It is me (aka Clarkson), yep I have gotten a solid 32mpg on a run. I have a 1641, stock cam & rockers, a pair of Dell'orto 34 FRD carbs, stock ignition and a EMPI Quietpack. The carbs really help, not massive on the power, but just enough. It'll go up hill and down dale at 55 all day long. They have short dumpy manifolds, much shorter than with an ICT. My father is a wizz with carbs, he does them by ear and the plugs burn a lovely brown colour. My uncle has been a caravanner for 50 years and he has given me loads of tips for shedding weight. All of my camping stuff is modern and uber lightweight, I have also looked at the construction of my westy, gone is the roof bunk as I never use it and I have remade the interior out of lighter material, not original I know, but much lighter. Don't carry gallons of water, it is heavy. BP now do hard plastic gas cylinders, a fraction of the weight. See how much useless weight you can shed before you shell out on expensive engine mods.

I am known for my hatred of lowering, here is the real reason why..

lower bus = low profile tyres

low profile tyres = lower gearing

lower gearing = lower mpg when cruising.

 Sorry I got a few details wrong.

I run a lowered bus, but with stock tyres. So I still have the same gearing ratios 8)

I get about 30mpg from my stock 34 pict 3 carb too. But mine is a tintop microbus
