Hi

Spent the best part of today (inbetween watching BRFC  ) fitting my spindles.

Here she is before

Picture044-1.jpg

I had no experiance of the front end before today so started with a bit of intrepidation to say the least! The wheels came off easily enough, I rested the front beam on axal stands and started stripping the brakes, all went well, but it took me ages to hit the spindle hard enough to free the bottom ball joint! Grrrr once that was off I started to reasemble.

All went together easily enough, but after putting the drum back on i realised something wasnt right, I then noticed that there is a spacer on the old spindle shaft, so after some persuasion i fitted it to the new spindle, but all that was after I bastardised the bearing seal on the drum then noticing I had the wrong size replacment!!! So I had to put it back wthout the seal for now! Will I do any damage if I use it tomorrow without the seal or am i better off waiting till next week??

The other side was done in 10mins!! But the is always a BUT :D The bottom ball joint just twisted as i tried to do the nut up, this put me bk an hour of head scratching!!!!

The wheels went on then i noticed that the bottom ball joint shaft fowled the wheel rim, so i ground off around 3mm and had to loose the lead ballancer. Is that normal?

I havnt touched the back and not sure that I need too, wot you think?

So my main concerns are, running with the seal missing, should I? and have I taken enough off the bottom ball joint shaft, im guessing that i wont get any movement. Drove it back and forwards to check for rubbing and all was ok, just not been out on the road.

i'd say drive it (disclaimer: any decision to drive will be souly that of the owner). it would take a good while for any damage to happen to the bearing just through a missing seal. though i would change in the near future. it seams odd how you can drop the front of a bay 2.5inch yet it then looks even, how heavy are german drivers

Thanks guys

The plan was to take the Mrs & the kids to the beach in it today, but think its best i take the car..............

What do you think about the tiny clearance between the botton ball joint and the wheel rim?

I had this problem when I fitted mine last week. I emailed Nate about it and he said to grind the bottom of the balljoints slightly, so I took about 3mm off. All fine now.

As for the balancing weights, I took mine off too and there's no noticable wheel wobble, but then I doubt it'd be noticeable anyway because so bloody low anyway.

All sounds fine to me, just replace that b/j rubber asap!

Thats ok then! there is/was a non-threaded part that I ground off.

Are the rubber boots available for the ball joints? Cause mine were shot! Also the N/S lower was a bugger to do back up, damn thing spun with the nut

At least ill have those boots changed in 10mis flat second time round

How much do u think the horseshoes are worth?

£63.7828... roughly!

I need to change my boots too, but I'm curtailing my spending until my big motor is in. 8)

Dont forget carriage & VAT!

I figure that as they work out at £100 less than Cool Air charge for just the spindles, selling the plates for £60 isn't really making a loss.

My reasoning is that they restore camber, but as it's IRS there's bugger all anyway.

Originally I bought the plates because the spring plates sit on the bump stops and I thought it was causing the buckaroo-like handing characteristics when I first lowered the bus.

Now I've done the front it's cured the problem without me touching the back end.
Just seems a bit pointless fitting the plates when I could recuperate some of my money.

And in hindsight I'm not a fan of welded stuff anyway, even if it has been heat treated properly.

Im happy with the stance of the front drop, and dont think im gonna lower it any more, so pointless touching the back end as it looks level.

fair play to you my friend..looks good 8) did you not need the clearance your backing plates as it says you may need to do on the WW site?.

ill be keeping my horse shoe as i hate camber on a bus.a personal thing :)
but i will be replacing my bearings with T4 ones for less strain. As for the welded bit..thats doesnt bother me either...my van is welded after all and a good 10mm weld can hold a ton!Proven on a car is born

Nope, just shaved a few mm's off the bottom ball joint. All very straight forward in fact :)
