Looks very likely that I'm going to need a new engine soon - any recommendations for where to source from. Main things to consider

1. Is it worth getting a 2ltr engine as I'm getting replacement
2. If 2 ltr, what other upgrades need to be done, ie brakes, suspension etc
3. What's a reasonable price?

At the moment I'm feeling fairly desolate, you know that sinking feeling when it sinks in you've just lost a loty of money.

I leave the swear words up to you, but they go something like ....... aaaaaaarrrrrgghhhhhh

A well sorted 1776 is most probley enough for anyone unless your thinking of tearing up the strip. Price depends on spec and builder.

Id agree with that 8) 1776 is your best bet with some nice twin carbs to get that extra treat  If your stuck, and need someone to do the whole package for you, give these guys a call and you wont go far wrong

I have some 34 Carbs ion the engine at the moment, so that should save a few bucks. Not overly interested in breaking the sound barrier, just want to be able to get places - I have a 1700 at the moment which is plenty fast. Better start saving my pennies!

Didnt realize you was talking about Type4 engines. Im not really sure about them or if you can get them in anything other than standard 1700/2000?

Might not be a type 4, Ive got a type 1 1700 (74mm crank stock B+Ps), its the perfect match for my late-early

I was in your position last year - hence not being at shows - and now have a new Mexican engine. Goes so well I' happily suggest that as your solution.

My mechanic also suggested twin Webbers to get some fun out of it as well as having it reliable.

Have you got a piccy. Did you need to use a adaptor plate to get a T1/T2 block in a crossdresser.

I'm planning on building an 1802cc (1641 B+Ps with a 76mm stroke) for my bus - a 74 or 76mm stroke with 1600B+Ps is far better for a bus than a 1776 IMO, as it gives much more usable torque. :)

I think the 1700 is standard, van is a crossover ..... all fairly irrelevant if the engine needs replacing. I have twin webber 34s already. All I need is a place to find a new engine as cheap as poss or a reconditioned one that will last. Am aiming to keep it 1700 or there abouts.

Cheers!

Give Laurie Pettitt a call - you might be surprised, but rebuilding your 1700 is probably the best option. Talk through your options. Laurie is the best value for money around. There are cheap recons about but most are not worth considering.
