Can anyone advise me what the numbers mean on a wiring diagram (please say it's ampage rating so I know what wire to buy!)
It's the 4s and 6s and 0.5s that are confusing me (actually I'm clueless about the 30 and 50 on the starter motor too!)

The numbers refer to the size of the cables - probably their cross sectional areas in square mm (which in turn is related to the carrying capacity in amps). This is different from the outside diameter.
So, as you would expect the cables going to the starter motor are bigger, than for example, the two brown earth wires shown.
30 and 50 on the diagram refer to the terminal that you connect the cable to.
Companies such as Vehicle Wiring products list their cables according to a number of parameters including cross sectional area and outside diameter.

Following on from vwed's post. The numbers on the wires do refer to the size of the cables, its their internal wire/core diameter. Also you may notice that all your electrical switches relays etc have little numbers on the terminals. Here is a link to a complete list of standard terminal numbers (thanks to Auto Electric Supplies).

The coding is also referred to as DIN72552 if you want to google. I found it very complicated at first but once you have a look its quite logical. I have managed to rewire my bus to its original loom using wiring diags from thesamba.com and these charts (my PO had just wired stuff in willy nilly - what a mess)

Happy wiring :D

Sorry to be an idiot Pellwood but does that mean the 25,0 labelled wire from the battery is an inch thick??

It means that wore has a cross sectional area of 25mm, not diameter. Its about 5.6mm diameter core...

I think that's right...

Sorry, my bad, i knew what i meant to say it just didn't come out right

rlepecha and vwed are correct the number refers to the internal wire area in square mm and not the 'diameter'

sorry for any confusion.

liking the the Bosch crib sheet, always wondered what the german was on the bottom of my wiring drawing was, makes sense now. i've printed it and filed it.

nice one pellwood
