Can I do away with my oil filler neck with the drip tube on it and replace it with one with only a breather as per my late bay? Or will this cause breathing problems?

cheers
Ginga

I think I know enough to get in trouble and not enough to get out of it!!

Yep that will work you just need to connect a tube from the breath to the air filter to recirculate the oil vapor through the intake.

The only thing is why would you want to do this? Stock system is fine unless your running a big displacement motor.

cheers for that, I started a thread on here last week about this but no nearer a cause.

engine is dripping a lot of oil out of the tube and when running it is like a secondary exhaust, compression tests show fine on all cylinders, I'm a bit baffled, it performs fine. Had one response that said twin carb engines do this but I don't understand why.

I want to get to the bottom of it as its a problem, but in the mean time I really need to save my drive from all the oil stains and my pocket from all the oil I'll have to buy.

Had a mechanic look and he said it was blowing more than usual but not too much, but I'm not sure he saw it at its worst.

Do you have the rubber valve on the end of the tube, if not you can still get them from status-vw.co.uk or heritage.

I think if you getting loads of oil comming out of here the the oil deflector gasket under the generator stand is eith missing or fitted with the louvers pointing the wrong way, louvers should point away from the crank from memory.

If its not fitted or is in the wrong way oil being flung by the crank will surge back up the pedestal and in to the breather tube.

could be the valve then as I cant remember seeing one on/in there, I'll have to presume the deflector is correct way round as it was fitted by a vw specialist.

I'll have a look for the valve, cheers for that.

If its dripping lots then it will be the deflector, I wouldnt assume that because someone claims to be a specialist that they dont make mistakes. I would take it back and ask them to check it.

Unfortunately the specialist concerned is in southern spain but I'll definately have a look, the mechanic I took it to in sheffield basically said the same thing, I'm just being lazy, I'll get my hands dirty tomorrow!!
The main thing that makes me think it isnt that is that it only started after 2000 miles on the engine and I would've thought it would do it immediately with the plate the wrong way round.

cheers

just a note to let people who responded to me know what happened with my engine.

just had engine rebuilt and no 3 piston had lost a gudgeon pin circlip which destroyed the piston ring, the gudgeon pin then slid out and destroyed the cyclinder bore allowing lots of oil to burn. This has also led to bearing wear. I've had it completely rebuilt which isn't a great advert for a 4500 mile remtec unit. Think I'll always get a bespoke engine built in future and pay the extra up front rather than a few months down the line!! but hopefully thats a few years away.
