Hi,

Just looking at the Petronix Ignitor kits to replace your points and condensor. Is the Ignitor II really worth the whole load of extra cash?

Take care

I just fitted an accuspark, much much cheaper and so far it's running well although I've only covered about 300 miles

I think the only real difference is that the ignitor 2 won't blow up if you connect it the wrong way around.

Thing is, if you've got stock points that are set up properly, you don't notice a difference moving to electronic ignition*. So in that scenario, it's just an increased service life that you're buying. That's fine, but if I'm doing less than 5k a year I won't bother with it.

Now on the bug, I'm doing about 30,000 miles a year- that's got a Velleman transistor kit. Cheap and cheerful, but maybe you don't want project boxes and stuff littering up your engine bay. Haven't adjusted it in three years, check it every six months or so, dwell is still bang on 50 degrees.

In summation- If you're worried about the cost buy the Ignitor 1 and watch the polarity on it. I'm not against electric, I just don't find points so inconvenient that I'd spend more than about a tenner.

*honestly, you won't. Unless your engine goes above 6k, you won't get points bounce and the electronic ignition will do exactly the same thing as your old points.

cheers guys :) I suppose I have been thinking about it as condensors only seem to last a year, Bosch one to! Point adjustment is no bother

I went electronic because I've had more rubbish sets of points on the van than good ones and always seem to find out about day two of the summer holiday! came to the conclusion that Chinese quality control was vaguely better on electronic stuff than mechanical stuff

Same here. It's just one less thing to worry about and the cost is soon recouped. I can't argue with Happystamps on this, but like a lot of decisions it is a simple trade off between convenience / peace of mind and a small initial outlay. I carry a spare a spare Accuspark unit (under £30) just in case the Pertronix blows, and that will slot-in in seconds which, on a M-Way hard shoulder in the dark, is a lot easier than refitting / resetting points.

Bang on :)

Many thanks guys. For now I have ordered a spare set of points and condensor until I save for a Petronix II which appears to have a few idiot checks in :)

Take care

I have been using Crane Cams XR700 transistorized electronic ignition for some years now, both on standard vac and 009 dizzy and found it be spot on. Starts first time every time. A bit more expensive than your normal , but fit and forget. Nothing wrong with Petronix ,it's just personal choice. And yes I have a spare points and condensor dizzy somewhere underback seat just in case but it has been there well wrapped up there for nearly 5 years now. Have a look at spec etc before you spend your money.

They have probably solved the problem now, but I've had a couple of petronix units over the years where the magnets have fallen out, I'm now running accuspark unit and works fine, couldn't face coughing up for another Petronix,
