i need a new MIG welding mask as mine seems to have given in (permanently dark - no longer auto shading even though i've changed the battery's)
What make can people recommend?
I only need it for personal / hobby use (very occasional use) and have a budget of about £50.

Have looked on ebay and they have some cheap ones (about £30) but they look cheap would prefer a decent one that will last.
Must be auto - darkening although i understand most nowadays are anyway.

I got this one a few years back on the basis of its magazine ratings. It does exactly what it says on the tin and is spot on. I also got the pack of 5 spare outer lenses as they do get scratched pretty quickly if you chuck it about a bit!

Stretching your budget a bit but this is what I use on a weekly basis for MIG and TIG. Worth spending the extra cash, grind function is handy too.

I got this one.

They are local to me so popped in last year, I'm a complete idiot when it comes to welding but found that this worked well for me. This is the one he recommended for diy usage.
Think I may have paid more fo it.

all my boys have ESAB helmets these can also be fitted with a resporator if your having to weld through any crap

I got one of these from ebay closer to £50 marklast year.

I know its double your budget but speedglass welding helmets are the best I've used
Nearly ever day I use mine an it's still like brand new
Ive used cheaper versions an they don't seem to flick to the dark mode quick enough

Hope this helps a bit

I got one of these Ebay but from a different seller. I like it a lot very comfortable and light too.

There is a nice selection here and Steve who runs the shop is very knowledgeable and able to help.

Arran.

I got this one and it's been good;

I bought a PARWELD XR914 in the end, couldn't decide between the SIFLite, the SWP variable or this Parweld.
In the end it came down to the best deal i could find and the Parweld was the best option

Nice one ;)

They are light to use and good ivehad no problems with mine.

The one thing that they said when I ough mine was to store it somewhere light so it keeps the battery charged, don't know if that's right. Mines in the storeroom in the gargevwhet the window is.

same here mate the only mask id ever buy,i have 3 of them they are by far the best on the market

Speedglas is a bit overkill for the hobby welder and double the budget, if you've bought a speedglas for 100 quid its either old, nicked or fake!

Snap on had them on offer when I got
Mine I swear it was around the 100 mark

you can most deffinatly get a speed glass for a 100 quid new not nicked or fake because i have bought a couple. They are the fixed shade though.i also have a air fed one that was over 400 new.You are right it might be a bit over kill for the hobby welder but it will last a life time unlike the cheapo ones.

Lee...

From what I've been looking at their entry level auto tinting shade (the 100) comes in at £130, had a go with an SL and fancy one of them myself (hopefully snap on man will have them on offer at some point but not got my hopes up, might end up with the 9100 if the price is right, got my TIG plant to pick up first :D )
