Although i'm also looking to change the carb/s, to get the best out of whatever i fit a free flowing exhaust would help so..
What exhaust can you recommend? Ideally i'd like to keep the heat exchangers so it must be something that fits these.
Also where is the best place to buy the exhaust?
Dont forget its on a standard 1600 TP currently running a Bocar 34pict3.
Would the exhaust on its own show me any increase in power?

I bought a Stainless header and Single Quiet Pack from Bluebird Customs, and have been well happy with it for over a year now. I can't tell you if it produces more noticable power on its own, as it was fitted to a new engine with a new Weber Prog, which gives a strong running engine with reasonable mpg, and an exhaust that won't need replacing after it rusts through in a year!

I have a just kampers stainless manifold with home brewed back box but they do sell quiet packs.
Again no idea on power as i fitted twin carbs at the same time

If running a standard carb you do have to drill out the pre heat tubes on the JK manifold.

I have the JK full stainless system inc back box and is actually really good. I prefer it to the bluebird one as you dont get that heat stripe down the middle of the box after a while. 8)

Looking at a combo quiet pack, that way i can change the back box when needed as i've heard that the headers dont tend to rust to much its usually the box.
Thinking of getting it from Kingfishers, mainly because there local'ish so i can save money on postage and return it if i have any problems

Bugpack single quiet pack works well with a 1600 tp, get a ceramic header with a mild steel backbox.

look here for some advice

People say they go rusty, but i've had mild steel systems last for years and years. The key thing is usage, if you don't use it often and store it in anyway damp conditions it'll rust out in no time. If it's used daily and gets nice and hot to boil-off any condensation from start-up you'll have no problems.

Avoid the cheaper systems as they are made from thinner metal

Beware of the dreaded heat stripe looks a bit plop after a while :( Just pick up a JK one from a show 8)

Just ordered a Single quiet pack from SSP, hopefully this will last a few months until we sell our other car then it Stainless time!

A good choice, you could always go for a turbo thomas box and a vw speedshop header

Im gonna get this set up for my notch, but will do some tweeking so it sits under just right and doesnt hang out the back like some 8)

this may give you some more thoughts, full stainless (no heat exchangers, so buy a big coat & woolie hat), Turbo Thomas £425.00, tucks away nicely, ours is a family bus so we asked for it to be fairly quite and it is :D

that TT is nice....

what do you get for £260 from speedshop?

I have an A1 muffler but no header yet, im not sure what i should do either as if i go a spline or 2 down at the back im afraid of ruining the muffler on the road or speedbumps etc. Whats the best header to buy to pull a A1 style muffler up and away from the ground. or should i sell and get a tuckaway system?

Go for a csp python  8)

I had a 2 spline drop on mine with the jk system and all was fine clearance wise 8)

What can be done about the heat situation though if i loose the heat exchangers?
Not thinking to much about me but the wife and daughter

We are getting a Turbo Thomas tuckaway muffler mounted to Bluebird customs header (running heat exchangers) within the next week will let you guys know when its done. 8)
