From what I can gather this can be done without dropping the engine or removing the fan?
Apparently I need to disconnect the thermostat rod - think I've done this
Remove two bolts in side of fan housing - where are these?
Lift housing high enough.

Is this correct?
Thanks

Yes, this can be done with the engine in place, but it is tricky as you don't have a lot of give!

You're most of the way there. How have you disconnected the thermostat rod?
Last time I did this I have to undo the 13mm bolt that goes in to the bottom of the thermostat and then this allowed me to unscrew the thermostat from the rod (i.e. the thermostat is what is turning, the rod should not).

The screws on the side of the fanshroud are what "pin" it to the cylinder heads.

You've also got to remove the 4 screws holding the alternator backing plates to the fanshroud and the alternator strap.

Once all is loose you should find that you are just able to lift the alternator up with the fanshroud and have enough space to tilt it off.

good luck!

Thank you both. After it took me all day yesterday and looking at most of the day today I've decided that the easiest way forward is to drop the engine. Never done it before so absolutely bricking it.
Also means I can access my fuel sender unit which has died.

I'm going to need more than luck.

Last time I dropped my engine I took the alternator off before doing so because I couldn't see the top-right bolt

If I can do an engine drop solo - anyone can :msn4:
Although I would recommend a second pair of hands when you come to do the final "drop".
