can you remove the dynamo on a stock setup without having to pull the engine??
or is it engine out job?
if it can be done what is the way in which you do it?
i'm guessing trying to get to the fixing bolts will be nigh on impossible or is there a seceret way ;)

Unless some one has changed the dynamo pedestal studs for bolts the easest way is as previous reply take engine out. The problem being that you have to lift the fan housing complete with dynamo to clear these studs. Replace the studs with bolts and if you ever have to change dynamo again it makes it a lot easier.

It's easy with the engine in, you just need to know how. There are 2 tin screws on the side of the fan housing above the plug holes, undo them. With the back plate bolts undone too lift the housing up towered the engine bay roof and with a wiggle it will come out complete with fan :D

is it possible with a complete stock setup including thermostat and flaps??
will the bar connecting the flaps together in the fan housing not foul on the oil coiler when lifted?
 
I did mine like k@rlos said, the only extra things I found you had to do was remove the carb and manifold which isn't a big deal. If you have a twin carb set up you won't have to do that though.
 
ive done it twice the second time in a hour and a quarter ;) its fairly straight forward a bit fiddly but very duable with the engine in ,it takes a while to remove towbar ,bumper,valance , then engine .......have a go
a few tips for you
remove the dynamo after you've lifted the fan housing up and wedge a block of wood between fan housing and cylinder shroud tinware .........you will be able to get to all four bolts that hold the dynamo on now ;)
put rags in holes and have a telescopic magnet to help speed up the process ...disconnect battery too as you dont want sparks flying around having just removed the carb and dynamo live feed :shock:

so i will need to remove bumper and valance etc etc.......is that so as you are closer to the fan shroud for ease of access??

I have done it with engine in situ, not too bad a job attached a couple of pic's which may help, although when my dynamo gave up for a second time I sent it to my local VW man and converted to an alternator

This is a point I forgot to mention, but not a big job. I don't run a stat or flaps on mine hence why I forgot to mention it :lol:
