Hi all

Removed the side belly panels from my 1970 and as could be predicted it reveal some good and some bad points. The bad include rotten sills (inner & outer) which will need repair.

I started to trim off the outer sill (which was itself a repair ontop of the original outer !!) and I think I have made some initial progress.

I am happy to replace the outer sill and part of the inner (where needed)but I'm not sure about the middle track-runner part - can this also just be repaired without having to drill out all the spots and remove etc..

Heres some pics to be getting on with..

Here you can see the rotten front section and also the 'weld-over' repair panel to the rear (still in blue paint).

This one shows the old outer removed as the mid/inner part cleaned-up a bit.

This one from under the van - a shot at the front section..

One other question . The outer sill I am removing was repair by an 'overlap piece'. I don't want to use another of these. Can you still get the complete outer with the grooove/lip fro the doodr seal below the
slide door runner ?

Cheers

Hi All

Maybe I can add some more specific requests..

Having read Mike Howles well known Spookey resto pages replacing the whole sill system is daunting me, also some reports state that the slide door track on replacement (middle) sills is poor. So I was hoping to

* Buy new inner and outer sills

* Cut repair sections from the inner sill to repair mine where needed (

* make middle sill repairs from sheet myself as 70% of the middle sill looks OK.

* remove all evidence of previous outer sills and repaint reseal as required.

Any comments ?

Cheers

I had to do exactly the same as you!!, if the slider track is ok then you just need to attach the outer sill to its bottom flange with tack welds. You can repair the middle (inner sill) with plating but if you have enough dough then i'd buy the innner one as well. If you drill out the existing spot welds by drilling down from the inside of the bus it is easy enough to position the new sills before welding them in. Hope this helps,

James (funny enough)

PS:- looking at the pics the job looks like it should be fairly straightforward :)

James,

Thanks for the encouragement. Will hack off (err carefully remove) a bit more of the old and see how it goes - have ordered an inner and outer first off - fingers crossed that will be sufficient.

Cheers

James
