Hi All,

When I start my van (or try to) I sometimes just get a click when I turn the key and the starter motor doesn't turn at all. This has been starting to happen more and more, and also starting is taking alot longer now.

I have checked all the earths, and they are fine, would replacing the starter relay solve this? is this possible?

Thanks

If you mean the starter solenoid then yes it would help but think this is part of the actual starter motor itself (although dont quote me on that) but you might beable to get away with cleaning up all the connections on the starter

Not necessarily it could also be that the contact brushes are worn out causing intermittent contact, also the windings could be breaking down.

I would think your best bet is to take it to a rewind specialist, they should be able to diagnose whats causing the problem and give you a cost, or get a replacement.

Does the solenoid click when the ignition is turned, if it does its probably not the cause of the problem.

There is definately a click when I turn the ignition key, but no turning of the starter motor

Register to this web site http://www.vagcat.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and go to this page it show an exploded view of the starter motor and the part numbers that are still available http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2/1969/29/57/367355/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

It looks like you should be able to get most of the parts you might need, my guess is the carbon brushes are worn out and only contacting intermittently.

This should save you the cost of a new starter, once you have the part numbers you need a main VW dealer should be able to supply you.
