Hi guys,

I've replaced all of the steering components, except the steering box.
All of the ball joints and tie rods are spanking new, and tightened.

The steering box has had a cleanout and degreasing, then filled with
bearing grease (not the VW-intended grease, but I read it's OK on TheSamba)

Now I still experience some play when steering, allthough I adjusted the steering box untill the adjusting bolt was pretty tight, steering is also heavier now.

What should I check before replacing the steering box (which is pricey so I'd rather not)?

How much play doood? there will always be a tiny amount 8)

Hey Easy - well difficult to say but it feels like it's almost 2 inches.

I've never driven it before but when I turn the wheel it moves 2" before the wheels move

First point to do is change your steering rods underneath, they usually bend over time. If you still get the play then change the steering damper and check again. 8)

Do this for now and see how it is, then if still movement its the steering box  and these are a touch expenive im afraid for a decent one 8)

Well, had a friend of mine over who works for GOCA, they run the MOT here in Belgium and he said it's perfectly fine.
I'm just used to driving modern cars with servo steering I guess

Another prob sorted!

Thanks Easy

I must admit 2" dont sound bad at all...I remember doing my driving test in a land rover that had closer to 2' movement  now that was scary especially afterwards on the motorway
