Helloes,

I've now come so far to work on the engine on my resto :D

The engine is an industrial motor with a hand crank pulley which is a bit heavy at the end (worried it would be problematic for the crank), so wondering if I should leave it on, change this for the old pulley from my original engine, or get a scat degree pulley.

If I use either the hand crank (1 filed mark on it) or my original (many marks on it) I would like to find the degree template to correctly mark the 7.5 and 30 degree marks after I have found the TDC from piston no 1.
I have searched on here and can't seem to find a link to the printable template.
Or should I just stump up for a degree pulley, I don't like the look of them but they're prob more accurate than I ever could be.

Next question about strobe or timing lights what kinds do you use?
Found this one, has anybody used it?

Are there better/cheaper options?

Cheers.

How I did mine... YMMV:

Find TDC using the pencil down the spark plug of #1 cylinder method. That's rocking the pulley back and forth until you've located the high point on the stroke.

Hopefully you'll already have a mark on the pulley that aligns with this but if not you have a bit of maths to do!

Measure the diameter of the pulley as accurately as you can.

The circumference of a circle can be worked out as pi*diameter. This will give you the "length" of 360 degrees. Whack a tape measure around the circumference of the pulley to check if you want.

You might then only be interested in 7.5 degrees for your mark. So divide your circumference calculation by 360 (to get the "length" of one degree) and then multiply this value by 7.5.

And apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, I just thought a full explanation might benefit future readers :msn4:

And as for the timing light - I just have one that I connect in series with the #1 HT lead... it was free

Cool Thanks George, yes was helpful.

So you don't set your timing with a strobe?
I've always only set it statically, but thinking I should start at high rpms with this new engine...

Cheers

Sadly not. It was a freebie off an old mate.
The one you've linked to is a lot posher

I use the gunson 77008 https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/gunson-77008-timing-light-with-advance-feature" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The advance feature on it means you just need the TDC mark

That's a good idea, no faffing with marking the pulley :D

Have you checked this feature on any degree pulleys to see if it's accurate?
Just out of interest wondering if they are as accurate.

Cheers

Mu pulley has both the TDC and 7.5 degree mark. So when it's set to 0 on the strobe the 7.5 mark is shown and when set to 7.5 the TDC mark is shown, good enough for me :)

Yup sounds accurate enough for me :)

Yeah I thought about borrowing one, but I'll need one at some point...

Won't be coming up to E-berg in quite a while so can't borrow yours

Cheers.
