I know this is earlybay but...

My Brother in law and Sister in Law have been away with us in the camper many times including a few VW Shows are are after a bus. However, they are also in the middle of a house extension so money is tight. They have 4 grand and need to buy a car to replace the lease car they currently have. Up until now they are adamant that its a Bay Window but I told them not to bother as he owns no spanners and the nearest place to go is an extremely expensive VW repairer in Cardiff. So here are the alternatives:

1 - VW T4 conversion (more reliable as newer and proabably more suited to everyday car)
2 - Bongo (jesus I cant believe I wrote that...)
3 - Buy a car and a Khyam tent until they can afford the one they want.

Any suggestions?

Late ones drive well, then again I drive a bay and I think that drive pretty good. I think at 4 grand getting a t4 camper is not an option.

I looked into T4's before buying the Bay, they're pretty expensive. The only way to buy a cheap one is go for super high mileage (200k +).
Bongos are tiny so not really a sensible option imo, the only other option is something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-T4-Camper-Countryman-conversion-from-Country-Campers_W0QQitemZ280335902161QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Campers_Caravans_Motorhomes?hash=item280335902161&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A7|39%3A1|240%3A1318" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's old but low mileage! Not bad looking either, some nice rims and a few stickers would make it look sweet! :mrgreen:

HI i managed to find a 2000 2.5tdi T4 for 2.5k. The cheapest way to do it is buy a panel van and convert it !!! They are out there if you look hard enough, vzi and ebay have inflated prices :x Try autotrader or local commercial van dealers. Mine was used to carry books so no battered panels.
You could get a 2nd hand caravelle interior like i did and carpet plylining (still to do) or get a rocking roll bed. This one has just come out which is what i would have bought had it been out at the time...looks the nuts http://www.vwt4styleline.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and it is the vw kombi t4/t5 sleepover bed.
Then get 60mm lowering kit from t4 r us, add some nice alloys 18/19 inch and your sorted for about 4k.
I'm still in the process of converting mine but i get wife, 2 kids ,dog,shopping and surf board in all at the same time, so in my opinion it is better than a car as it drives just as well :D
