Just had an interesting conversation with a very nice lady at the DVLA.
The van's V5C shows its date of registration as 1/1/1975 so it isn't eligible for free road tax until 2016 (as it wasn't registered before 1/1/1975).
However I stumbled across a DVLA form INF 34 which has a line (about halfway down under 'You will need' -
"If theV5C indicates that the vehicle was registered from 1 January 1975 up to and including 7 January 1975, we will let you register it as a historic vehicle, based on the assumption that the vehicle would have been made in the previous year".
The very nice lady agreed it fell into that category, explained the procedure and said a refund for the six months already paid will be issued once the change of taxation class to Historic is registered on their system. Result!
So if yours is registered (or maybe manufactured?) between 1/1 and 7/1/75 you may find you're eligible for free road tax. Worth a check and a conversation with DVLA.

Yeah, it should always be done on the build date. A birth certificate will prove this for sure, as will an understanding of the m-plate.

Some vans sat for long periods before being registered.
