TDC advice please!

I have an AD code 1600TP engine, but I don't know how many degrees before Top Dead Centre (TDC) I should set it.
I'm going to get the strobe out tomorrow but it would be great to have a starting point - it runs, but it's bloody rough at the mo' :lol:

With a standard SVDA (single vac/mech distributor), 7.5 degrees BTDC at idle. There should be no difference in the timing setting with or without the vac hose connected, but it is meant to be done with the vac hose plugged.

With it plugged, it should reach about 30 degrees at max mechanical advance (approx 2500-3000rpm). And about 40 degrees max advance with the vac connected.

With a 009, set it at 3000 degrees BTDC at more than 3000rpm (or when the max advance kicks in). Then bin it and fit a decent distributor.

With a DVDA (vac distributor with two vac hoses going to it), time at 5 deg ATDC with no vac hoses connected, before swapping the vac can for a single vac one and timing at 7.5 deg BTDC.
 
It won't run that well without the vac can working... best to buy a new one from GSF, the vac can itself is only about £15 - makes a world of difference to drive ;)
 
I think you want GSF part number 92410, although it might be 92415, but I've never seen a distributor with a 4 screw fixing for the vac unit (which 92415 claims to have).

Both are £16.50 plus VAT, or VW heritage etc may sell them too.

Thanks again - I've put an ad on the forum for a dizzy, if that doesn't pay off I'll repair the one I have.

I was always of the assumption that one notch would indicate the point the timing would be set at - otherwise there would be a lot of mechanics getting their protractors out.
Of course it depends if the pulley is the original and matched with the dizzy fitted ;)
Check to see if there is a dimple on the other rim to the notch that will denote TDC.

This may help (but make sure you read the front and rear rim descriptions carefully.

Loxy to the rescue - again!!

It's just a shame that I spent time this morning cutting in a notch that looks like a factory mark - it'll confuse the next owner no end!!!

Pully notch is usual TCD on number one piston, easy check put a socket extension through number one plug hole and wind engine over by hand until you get No1 to TCD then look where the notch lies, remember two TCD's per engine cycle so you may need to roll it over another 180 degrees.
