Hi all i have stripped my engine since it was out to give it a going over new gaskets oil seal ect and i noticed that there is no thermostat or flaps in the fan shroud .. .. someone told me that it is fine to run an engine without them as it just means that untill its warm it may run a little lumpy ? is this right or is it best to get some new and install them ..?

cheers guys ..

Those german fellas knew a thing or two about making engines ;)
Not having flaps isn't likely to kill it instantly but will in the long run be detrimental to the life of your engine, even more in the winter.

This might help you :)

cheers guys ! Better get hunting as i need to put the engine back in soon . they are out of stock at the mo on that link trikky2 but gotta be worth throwing them an email . ;)

Even if you dont run a thermostat then the flaps are better left in situ, as they direct the air correctly over the heads ... like Loxy says, they didnt just do this stuff for the sake of it. :)

thanks Clem - now that's a revelation - I did not realise the t'stat flaps directed the airflow - my van never had the flaps and I bought it 12 years back...not had any cooling problems despite hot continental driving but I think I shall now get a set...ta!

I ripped mine out on my old van years ago, when I fitted a 009 etc etc as was the general advice back then. I did a lot of reading afterwards and eventually ended back with a vac advance dizzy and thermostat and flaps! My thermo isnt working correctly, but is open all the time so directs maximum airflow - this isnt too much of an issue as Im a shandy drinking summer driver ;) but I do beleive the hype regarding airflow ... given the increased lileyhood of head cracking on twin-ports, and also on Number 3 cylinder with dog house fan shrouds fitted, then its worth leaving them in place, I reckon. :)
