Just wondering if anyone has any advice. I need to pay for something in Europe, what is the best way of transferring the money? Just using a normal bank transfer? If so, in euros or pounds?

Thanks!

The best way of transferring money depends on the amount and how secure the transaction is. If in doubt talk to your bank.

The currency you transfer depends on what currency the thing you are paying for is priced in.
Eg. If its in euros - transfer euros. If its in sterling transfer sterling. Otherwise the amount you transfer won't exactly match the asking price since the exchange rate you get varies all the time.

Asking price is in sterling. I'll contact my bank to find out.

I've found HiFX they seem to have the best exchange rate and no fees to pay. Will update once I've done it.
Thanks for the replies.

Playing devil's advocate, if you do a bank transfer and something goes wrong you have little recourse.
If you pay with PayPal (assuming the seller accepts PayPal) you have some protection in the event of things going wrong.
Furthermore a high street bank will charge you £10 for the privilege of doing a transfer to Europe, which on a relatively small transfer is another add on to the overall cost of the item. On the other hand PayPal (assuming you have funds in your account) will cost you nothing.

Ive used these and they are good!
Also you can do it online via the post office - and if you send over €250 then its free, i use this fairly often and can recommend it ;) ( the post office actually use hifx at the mo although they are changing to another company in april i think )

Edit- id also agree with the above - if its not a particularly large sum then go with paypal!

Thanks guys. It's a large sum and I don't trust paypal with that kind of money so I think HiFX is my best bet.
Cheers

I use a company called Moneycorp for all my overseas transactions, up to date exchange rates and a fixed rate for money transfers. It's always worked for me and transfer straight into seller account which is traceable as you get receipts saying what has been paid and when.
Never failed for me.
If a seller is genuine they will give you their bank details.

I wonted to buy a bus from abroad
I couldn't get my head around wiring 10k to someone I didn't know and trust.
I spoke to my bank about wire transfers. I've got a good friendship with the girls in my local nationwide . I asked them about bank transfers and they made calls ect but there is no guarantees at all transferring money from a bank account.
Pay pal has conditions!
All I can say is speak to graham l
If I was gonna do it , which I bottled out ! , I'd trust graham , go through him , get his advice!

It's been a while since I've done a bank transfer for Europe but I used to always receive money in pounds sterling and have the sender share the charges...that worked out best for me.

I sent some money to the USA and used TransferWise after they were recommended by the moneysavingexpert forum.

Just thought I'd update this. I paid for my bus using HiFX. The process was extremely quick and simple. Registration was easy and the payment was in the sellers bank account in two working days.
They also have excellent customer service and the best exchange rate I could find. Would definitely recommend.
