if the lugs seem to be just tacked on then it could me more of a quality control fault than a design fault. It maybe those particular spring plates didn't get finished off and we're shipped out without proper checks. This in itself is not acceptable but is a different problem to bad design. I bought a pair of struts for a bmw once that on one the spring cup had only been tacked on where the other was properly seam welded. Not a design fault, just a quality control fault. Quick phone call and all was sorted.

Just throwing a different view on this.
