Hi all

Whilst upgrading to ICT34s (see http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?uid=14236&f=4&t=59873&start=0) I have hit another problem.

I was in the midst of adding a balance pipe to try to get my crossover to idle on all 4 cylinders instead of only 2 and 3. With the manifolds out, I thought I'd check cylinder compressions to make sure there wasn't something more serious afoot.

Well.... Measuring them all cold:

#1 121 psi
#2 52
#3 150
#4 110

Adding a tsp of oil to #2 raised it to about 70psi.

I haven't adjusted the tappets for a few hundred miles but it seems a little more serious than that...

So ... what do I do now? Is it time to look for a replacement engine ... ?

Hope you had the throttle wide open for the Comp. test?
Squirt a little oil down the plug hole and re-test If the CR goes up alot it's the piston rings if not it's the valves

With inlet manifolds & carbs removed, I don't think throttle could be any wider!

Reset all the valve clearances and re-ran the tests with similar results - #2 cylinder is way down.
Did the added-oil test before and it helped (50 -> 70 psi) so it looks like piston rings.

For it to be a mahoosive difference like that,, my moneys on the head and valves and seats unless you has a hole in your piston.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Cracked head maybe ??

Bang on the money, Ozziedog. A cracked head.

So ... rebuild as a full flow 1776cc happening as we speak. In the meantime, I'm taking the opportunity to get all the tinware and the mounting bar powder coated, along with the bumpers and irons.
