I've just fitted a VDO tacho (71 1600 TP, electronic ignition). Needle was really jumpy and the tach read high at higher revs. No mention of this possibility in the fitting instructions or VDO's website that I can see. Following research on The Samba (which suggests it's not an uncommon problem) I cured it by fitting a diode in the line from the coil.
