Hello

Is there any out there who can tell me more about this VW-part number?
It's the number I found on a gearbox: 002 301 103D
Can anyone give me more information please?
Is it an early bay box or late bay?

It was offered to me for a very low price and I would like to know if I can use it for my EB.

I believe that is the case number only, If you look back towards the nose cone theres a Alpha numeric string, starting with two letters and I think 6 digits CA is the early if memorys working

Have at look at this

http://www.partsemporium.co.uk/type_2_gearbox_codes_and_ratios.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Use it as a guide only as it is very American orientated. If you look below the oil filler plug your should see flattish area which will have the gearbox code. It could be all numeric. The area is probably coated in dirt and crud but will have the number stamped in. Numbers that are cast in are the part number of the casting and offer little info.

That site is slightly wrong there are at least three versions of the three rib 002, the first have a different final drive / diff arrangement and early clutch release bearing.
then theres the early CA box which will have a stamped CA followed by a number string this is the date stamp, 002 boxes I've seen have had 6 digits but I believe bug boxes have 5 (I may be wrong)
then the later version for the 72 with the mounting lugs above the bell

Now I said at least 3 variations not including the limited diff options because I did have a CO box some time ago, it came out of a early but how early? it was without the extra lugs so falls between the 67-72 dates and only had 3 ribs but I cant remember which diff was fitted....
