iv just taken my air filter off (pancake style ) to change it for a new one . and the carb and old filter have oil in them???
my van has been running bad for around 4 days what could this be??? i hope its not bad news :|

I had this problem on my old sp engine, it turned out the head was knackered

is the engine running on all 4 cylinders? check by taking a lead off plugs one by one and listen for a dip in revs, no dip means a potential problem with plug or head (if head check compression)

Normally a sign of buggered rings or barrels. The piston, instead of compressing the air/fuel pushes it past the ring and into the crank case causeing air to shoot out ya breather and into the pancake filter.

Although my last bug had a ***** pancake filter and that was ALWAYS full of oil!! I put an oil bath type on and all was well. Never over flowed or rose or fell so it could be that. Dont ask me way.

Compression test will tell you if anything major is wrong either way.

Ash.

Fit a decent air filter and ensure the engine can breathe properly (don't use any of the ***** aftermarket crankcase breathers which restrict engine breathing compared to stock) and try again. :)

Pancake air filters and mini crankcase breathers were invented by VW parts sellers to bugger engines. Then they can sell you a nice new engine. Why does this set-up wreck engines? Because the VW flat four is designed to run with slight negative case pressure - which is why the crank breather goes straight to the air filter on the vac side on a stock set up. If these aftermarket shiney pieces of **** are fitted then the case will have positive pressure, blowing oily air out of all your seals. Eventually the main crank seal lets go and with it most of the oil. This often happens on hot days during long motorway journeys when people are heading for Devon and Cornwall.

How do I know all this? I've lived by the A30/M5 for 20 odd years and know several local garage guys who show me at least two seized engines a year. Guess what? Most have pancake filters and mini 'breathers'. Throw them away please and fit a stock setup.
